And, as 1overcosc mentioned, the added benefit of escaping the elements in the Winter is great too

What I'm wondering now is what will be done with that large gaping hole in the façade of the Bay when they remove the western overpass? I kinda want to see the Bay evacuate that building, so it can become it's own entity (Saks 5th ave? Uni-Qlo? Top Shop? etc...); then the Bay can concentrate on properly renovating the Freimans Building.
Same, happy with the news that the West Skywalk will be demolished while the East Skywalk will be re-furbished.

I had the same thought about the gaping hole in the Freiman's heritage façade. They could just place a logo in there, either Hudson Bay's or Saks' in the off chance they move to Ottawa. With Holt now closed, there's an opportunity to fill the void.

To put in my 2 cents on c_speed3108 comment, I would have liked one or two underground walkways between north and south Rideau (maybe old food court area to HBC and Ogilvy to William Street subway entrance).

Looking for more news about the skywalk removal, I found this NCC report on the expansion/renewal. It has many of the same plans and architectural drawings as the City's d-vapp, but with one 3D plan a fully built out Rideau Centre on page 27. It includes a new hotel on the corner of Nicholas and McKenzie-King and a condo where the red garage is now. The old Registrar's office is still standing in a plaza type space in the middle of the hotel expansion.

New towers seem taller than the Novotel.

Looks to be about 32 storeys to me. Seems odd that they would divulge this tidbit in a presentation to the NCC about the current expansion as it could just complicate issues at hand.

This has got to be one of the most exciting few blocks in the city right now and for years to come! There is some great potential here.

the western bridge won't cause a hole in the freiman facade. its in the neighboring building, which they can just fix up. its facade is a "rebuild" anyways of its original one. its made to mimic the former older building which was falling apart I believe. They would never have been allowed to poke a hole into Freiman's actual facade!

On a different note, the liquor licence application is up for Nordstrom's.

I was on the roof of the Rideau Centre as part of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat's 7 Cities Winter Spaces Walking Tour: http://ctbuh.org/Events/Calendar/2015Eve...a/tabid/6740/language/en-US/Default.aspx

I didn't take a photo, but they have a large windowed area with a door open to the roof, so it looks like a restaurant there is a go...hopefully.

I wish they(Rideau Centre) had more stuff happening on the roof, to be honest. I feel like that's a bit of a wasted resource. I was hoping they would have included that as part of their "phase 2" expansion plans.

They are rebuilding the 4th floor where the cinema was, it's down to steel beams right now, not sure if there is a final plan, at one point their mockups showed an expanded cinema, we shall see.

Ya, I know it's the taller part of Freiman's on the west end of the mall between Woolworth (now Chapters) and the main Freiman Departement Store (now main section of Hudson's Bay).

What I didn't know was that the façade is a knock off of the original. Did the same thing happen with Woolworth/Chapters; façade was crumbling so they re-did it (half assed job obviously).

Well, as per the document I posted yesterday, the roof top patio falls under NCC responsibility, which would explain a lot.

According to a Kijiji job posting, the restaurant at Nordstrom's will be called "Bazille":

Here's an idea of what's on the menu:

Here are some pics of Nordstrom taken today. The sign is up. I'll be working in men's furnishings. Stop by and say hi if you come in on opening day.

It is not actual furniture, I'm prestty sure it is the section that has the dress shirts, ties, cufflinks, belts, socks, etc... They are usally placed in one section in most department stores.

I worked 35 years ago in the retail trade and even then it was called men's furnishings.

I suspect that it was previously called haberdashery.
