In some retail news, Verve Coffee Roasters has just opened its long-awaited cafe on Spring St. just north of 9th. I'm always happy to have more coffee choices Downtown that don't require schlepping to the Arts District. Plus, the space looks stunning: http://la.eater.com/2015/1/29/7948041/ve...ntown-los-angeles-photos-gallery#4655906

That is why I posted the Cliftons pic from today - the signage has disappeared. He must have been just testing it a few days back?

Excellent photos as always, Mr. Denizen.

950 East Third is finally breaking ground in the Arts District. Initial phase is 248 apartments, full build-out is 472 units and 21,000 sq. ft. of retail.

Interesting map comparing Central LA density to SF at https://twitter.com/michaelprhodes/status/560896811297021953. Imagine what it will look like if DTLA's boom continues (or if the Hollywood NIMBY mess gets cleared up).

Will this help Metro seriously push ahead with an Arts District station? We all know it's basically just building an at-grade station and changing their signage to indicate a new terminus. I imagine a state or federal grant would provide much of the funds.

I wouldn't have even realized that if you hadn't mentioned it. but new hints of work on the facade hopefully means the renovation is moving closer to completion. That proj must be a series of trials & tribulations for its owner & I hope things turn out well for him.

Since ppl are more & more into a live experience...in this age of virtual reality....the kitschy old charm of a cliftons may be more in tune with trends now & in the future than the way things were even a few yrs ago....or the time when the burbs in LA were what most ppl favored & were making a beeline to.

the amt of new projs breaking ground is becoming quite astounding, certainly by the standards of dtla. I have to pinch myself that this is really all occurring....finally. however, dtladenizen's pic of the site at 5th & olive shows the hood remains an ongoing work in progress.

when I watch this vid, I recall how many of the locations caught on film were parking lots not all that long ago....such as the hideous lot across from city hall....& definitely did not enhance the feel of such areas.....

big & small changes, when added together, make a difference....

Somehow this feels like a post-regional connector thing. But this would be huge...

Actually, the signage put up is a prototype while the real signage is currently under construction by 100 monks in Tibet. Completion is expected some time in calendar year 2017 with installation to occur in the first quarter of 2019, or after the bldg is painted................whichever comes later. [bad attempt at sarcasm]

Nice find! I like this design of the retail low-rise portion much better than the one posted a few days ago. The triangular site is definitely well-suited for a small plaza flanked by shops, which will contribute to street life in a big way.

View of one of the Olympic low-rises. Now, if we could only ditch that gas station (though it's the only one for quite a distance).

^Not bad, and I feel a lot better knowing that Gensler is involved. I really want to see what they're doing at ground level with the remainder of 9th street, and the corner of 9th and Flower. It will be an urban planning sin if they don't have retail at that corner too.

There will be retail on that corner as well (approx 1,700 SF).
