I supported the Oilers till 2011 still love the team (Jets have taken over my life) but I will never watch another Oilers game unless Kevin lowe and macT is gone. I absolutely can't stand the management group in Edmonton and if they win a cup next season with lowe in office I wont watch one game of it. They are the worst...period... managed franchise...period..ever...period. The Oilers have ruined more bright future's than Crystal Meth.

Quebec and other Canadiana expansion aren't of that much importance because the TV deal(s) in Canada are already lucrative and the teams (more or less) sell out all of their games anyway. I'm fairly certain Ottawa is the only team that doesn't sell out consistently and that's mainly due to their arena not being in Ottawa at all.
TV is absolutely a factor, but attendance is nothing to sneeze at. It's all about increasing HRR (Hockey-related revenue) so TV money, while a big part of that, is not the whole picture.

Adding Seattle (14th largest TV market - according to this http://www.stationindex.com/tv/tv-markets) will likely help in future TV contracts and could add a sizeable Local TV contract into the mix as well. Las Vegas (42nd on the list) probably less so. Keep in mind that the NHL just signed a 10-year deal with NBC, so it will take time until the increase TV revenues (nationally) are realized.

With Quebec, attendance and merchandise should be sky-high, especially at first. While it too may not affect the Canadian national TV deal (Rogers) which is just coming into effect, it could increase the property's value at renewal time. However, a Quebec team would certainly spark an intense bidding war on the local/regional TV contracts now that there are 2 French language Sports networks - TVA (Quebecor/Videotron) and RDS (Bell) - who would be tripping over each other to lock up that deal. I'd be fairly confident that a Quebec team could outperform Seattle and (definitely) Las Vegas for local broadcast rights.

Add that to the (likely) higher expansion fee that could be had from hockey-starved Quebec, I'd think that, at least in the short-term, Quebec would be a bigger revenue generator than Seattle and (again, definitely) Las Vegas.

My $0.02...

I think almost 4 years have run on that deal and negotiations for a new deal will surely begin at least a year before the current deal expires. That leaves just 5 years or less. So making new American franchises a top priority right now actually makes sense with respect to securing the next big U.S. national TV deal.

Pretty good analysis there Horus.

There are unfortunately a few more flies in the ointment for Quebec City now that weren't there a year or so ago...

Actually its the reverse. THE Ohio State has an ownership stake in the arena now and is seen as one of the major reasons the Jackets' future looks bright. Before this situation the school, using their own large scale arena, was competing with Nationwide for events (and doing quite well at drawing a whole bunch of acts away). This split an already small arena marketplace into 2 and drove profits of both facilities down. Ohio State could weather the storm better due to their enormous athletic department revenues while the Jackets and Nationwide could not.

Now that Ohio State has bought into Nationwide Arena, the 2 entities now longer compete and the bottom line for both arenas has improved as the cutthroat pricing tactics have disappeared. The Blue Jackets have been the largest benefactors in all this

Ah, I had it backwards. I remember Columbus nearly going belly-up and The Ohio State was involved in some capacity. My bad.

Interestingly it seems Seattle's chances have taken a blow lately now that the Milwaukee Bucks will be staying in Milwaukee due to their new arena agreement. Seattle can't really build a new arena without an NBA tenant, which is sort-of the prerequisite for an NHL team there as well. The Atlanta Hawks have just been put up for sale so there's rumours there may be some interest in moving them to Seattle but without a confirmed tenant Seattle seems like a longer shot to happen at that juncture.

It seems to me that you have absolutely no clue what is going through the minds of these players and you are sustituting you're own prejudices in place of the players true motives.

Let's continue:

This statement easily proves that you have no clue what you are talking about. Winnipeg has indeed changed a lot but to claim that Quebec hasn't is a complete fallacy. It also is easily verifiable.

In the last 20 years, Quebec City's economy completely turned around. Its unemployment rate dropped from around 12% in 1995 to around 5% these days, consistently putting Quebec amongst the country's best cities. In the last 5 years, Quebec City's

- average GDP increase
- average weekly earnings increase
- labour force increase
- median family household income increase

were all higher than the national average and higher than Winnipeg's though the Peg is doing very well too.

Quebec's new airport and multi-level parking: built in 2008 and 2014
Quebec's airport new international terminal: construction 2015
Quebec's Beaux-Arts museum new pavilion: in construction
Quebec's new 2nd tallest: built in 2014
Quebec's convention center: $40M expansion built in 2014
Quebec's exhibition center: $40M expansion built in 2011
Quebec's new arena: construction to end in 2015
Quebec's new 2,5km, $100M award winning park: built in 2008
Quebec's new $2B mega-hospital: construction to start in 2017
Etc, etc, etc

Quebec consistently appears on good economic reports and articles, beautiful cities lists, good living standards lists, etc. I live here and very much participate in the cities cultural offerings but perhaps I should take your words for it that there is nothing to do and nothing changes here...

You should travel more...

And finally this crown jewel:

How dare you play the victim? You've bashed Quebec City without knowing anything about it and tried to seem reasonable with the 'my family is from there' line. You've posted uninformed opinions and got called for it. Grow up.

Forumers like you are the reason why I do not enjoy posting on this forum as much as I used to.

P.S. I don't even like the new arena that much and actually prefer Edmonton's. I'm also very much aware of the problems Quebec faces in its bid to win an NHL team. A troll, however, I am not.
Bravo. Bravo.

I think the exterior of the QC arena looks dated too. The ability to keep a conversation flowing is great and critics are welcome as long as they are expressed in a polite way. But how hard is it to not start stirring — by insulting other cities and being arrogant? That's when you cross the line.

Atlanta, city of 5M+ , to Winnipeg. I don't think it's a problem for Bettman, he's low profile, they won't say publicly.. ''ok, Quebec City will have a team in 2017''. makes no sense.
