More details are coming out about the Future Shop closing and the new Y. Future Shack closes on Monday; some staff going to Best Buy.

Plans for the new Y.

Lots in the media the last few days about the demolition of Haultain School and the coming housing. Wasn't Haultain condemned? (ETA: Found online they closed Haultain the same same time as Dieppe bc it had barely over 100 students and no expectations for increased population, not to mention building was in bad shape.)

... Not to mention Anytime Fitness just a little south on PoW and Harding! (EDIT: Oops! s/b PoW and Woodhams Dr. E. -- Harding St. starts west of PoW. I should know, the tots & company visit the Sandra Schmirler Centre every now and then! )

I was driving around downtown last night about 10pm, and noticed there's some nightlife happening, judging by the amount of parked cars along some streets like Victoria Ave, 11th Ave., Hamilton St., Scarth St., and spotting more than a just few groups of people walking around! Although it was a very nice Friday night, which helped, it looks like more options for people after regular office hours have increased the night traffic (vehicular, and pedestrian) in those parts of downtown somewhat!

... Different story on the City Square and Victoria Park, though -- completely devoid of pedestrians. I hope that Capital Pointe project will help add something for liveliness to that side of downtown, when (if) it gets completed!

Brandt Center

Looks like they got a fancy new scoreboard at the Brandt Center:

Before Friday, Pats fans were accustomed to seeing scoreboards that were affixed to the walls in the east and west ends of the arena.

Upon assuming control of the team, Marquart and his cohorts resolved to rectify that situation. They spent $3 million to upgrade the Brandt Centre.

The Semples own the Brandt Group of Companies, which has the naming rights to the Pats’ home arena. The Brandt group was the project manager for the in-season renovations.

“I think we as a community should take great pride in the scoreclock,’’ Marquart said. “This is for everyone. The nicest scoreclock in Canada, and arguably North America, is in Regina, Saskatchewan. We take great pride in delivering this to the city. This should make us all feel good.’’

Mission accomplished.

The Viterra building heritage grant is going to Council tonight, although the media will all be focussed on the strip joint approval.

The are actually doing some real restoration. It is not just a reno. They have managed to slide some expensive HVAC work in on the basis that it will preserve the exterior.

Conservation Work
The owner plans to undertake specific conservation work on the exterior of the Sherwood
Department Store as detailed in the Conservation Plan attached as Appendix C. The
conservation work proposed includes:
• The terracotta elements (ie gargoyles, shields, vertical piers) are character defining
elements of the building. Repair to the terracotta features will include cleaning, pinanchoring,
crack repair, deep spalling repair, surface repair and glazing.
• The brick work will be cleaned and repointed as necessary.
• The cast iron spandrel panels between the second and third floors will be cleaned and
repainted to match the original colour.
• Windows will be replaced with new units that approximate the original window
configuration and profile and use finish materials and details that are generally
compatible with the original 1913 building.

That screen is awesome, and I know people came out to see it. But it is amazing to see a sold out Brandt Centre! I expect a good crowd for the next home game as people who previously wanted to see it and didn't get tickets will get them for the next game.

I have also heard a rumor that the ownership group owns land (or will own land) in the old rail yards, onto which, rumor says, they plan to build a 10,000-15,000 seat NHL caliber arena. Which, also according to rumor will be paid for entirely by private money. That IMO would be a great boost to the Downtown core, also allow for redevelopment of the Brandt into more City rinks whilst still allowing the Rodeo and other things.

Certain owners have lands across the tracks on Sask Drive (the parking lots west of the Post Office). All the rail lands are owned by the City or CP.

The bolded part will never happen. No private business would build a $200 million arena, which is guaranteed to lose money, without public contibution.

This could happen but it will be 10 years and New Mosaic Stadium will have to be shown to be a great success.

You mention " the parking lots north of the post office." What parking lots north of the post office? Do you mean the parking lots west of the post office?

At Wascana lake , the new state of the art football stadium , all the new high rises in the past few years , what's going on here is this really happening in the Queen city , also the over one billion dollar bypass , the redevelopment of the moasic lands it's crazy but true. Look out baby here comes the royal city looking good

If there is demand then the private sector will go for it. But the city has nothing to do with it, and if land costs are too high for it to be profitable then companies will choose to build around the outside of the city.

Whatever happened to, I believe it was, ALT that was advertising looking for space in the core for a hotel?

Not sure, but the SGI tower RFP tied up most of the suitable building sites, so maybe they will pick up one of those now that the RFP was pulled.

Speaking of Hotels, it now looks like Regina will go from 0 to 4 Marriotts this year. Delta has been acquired by Marriott. Not sure if they will phase out the brand or just call them Delta by Marriott or some variation.

Alt just raised $80 million in equity to:
Quote:
allow Group Germain Hotels to develop the Alt Hotels brand in Canadian markets where it does not currently have a presence.
With mortgage financing they should be set for several new hotels.

The last "highrise" hotel build downtown was the Wingate - completed in '07. Otherwise, the most recent true highrise hotel was the Delta (nee Ramada Renaissance) which was completed in '88.

Fortis Properties bought the hotel from Remai Investments (the original owner/developer) in 2007 for $50 Million. I am surprised to hear they are selling it, but hey, it's probably a lot cheaper for someone to buy & renovate than it is to build a new hotel of this calibre.

Something you might not know...
The hotel was designed so that the office floors (4-11) could be converted to future guest room floors.
Floors 10 & 11 were converted to hotel rooms several years back, increasing the number of guest rooms by 24, for a total of 274.
The elevator core was built with openings on every floor for the 4 main elevators (3 guest & 1 service) but are hidden behind the walls on the office floors until needed.
The office floors have their own 2 dedicated elevators which do not go higher than floor 11.
