It's a combination of the dreary sky (blocking out Vancouver Island) and the gritty downtown east side I guess, and also because it's at the perfect angle to capture the open ocean without the mountains in the frame.

There are a lot of interesting things going on in this shot. I really like it. I don't know if I've ever seen a photo from this particular angle.

that is an interesting shot. instead of pristine looking ocean and forest, there is the ports and the dt eastside in the foreground. condos are less prominent. the city has completely different feel here.

This image makes the skyline feel more corporate and big city like. The normal angles show too many condo's giving it a resort look.

Agreed! It's always been my favorite view of Vancouver, even before the boom of the 2000s...

Great shots of Ed, Mtl, and (as always), Van.

Huh... Didn't think there was still low-rise SFH or semi-detached homes in the downtown Van peninsula...

Guess there is still more potential for high and mid-rises then

I don't think that a lot of development would be allowed to transform those parts of the West End as they're established lowrise historic nabes and there would be a huge public backlash. Probably not just by local NIMBYs either.

I like seeing some nice old houses mixed in with the condos, adds some nice variety to the built form.

Love that angle of Van, almost Montreal-ish.

It will be 4 lanes, maybe in the next 50 years. There are a few spots that are 4 lanes, near Montebello and Papineauville. The overpasses they built for the highway are like an 'ok, we'll build it one day' gesture.

I drive frequently from Gatineau to Quebec City, and I'd have to say my most preferred route is 50, 640, 40 to Quebec. I try to not drive during MTL rush hour though. I've tried the 417-40-30-20 route as well, but it seemed longer (always a traffic jam at the 30/20 ramp.. plus you have to pay a toll (which is nothing, acutally).

This past holiday season, I took the 40 straight from QC to MTL and on to the 417. There were no delays at all. I was looking at google traffic at the time.

The 50 is way more scenic than the 417... unless you are a fan of Herb's.

Those homes will never be redeveloped. They comprise a neighbourhood known as Mole Hill, the oldest remaining intact neighbourhood in Vancouver, consisting of wooden houses dating back to the 1880s, when the city was just being born. I believe the houses are protected by the city's heritage registry and owned by the province and subject to a trust.

You can see some photos of the homes here: https://www.google.ca/search?q=mole+hill...NIOgNrGtgbAO&sqi=2&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&dpr=1
