Interesting that he alludes to the possibility of expanding the hotel size of the biz, although I get the impression that would mean veering outside of his area of expertise. The Pemby would be an ace spot for a new hotel, but that would likely mean giving up the bar... can't see that happening.

I spent many a night at the Pemby in the mid to late 90's, early 2000's...

Two-fisting $6 pitchers of beer.... ahh, the days before minimum drink prices and "people per pitcher".

I haven't been there in years, but I seem to recall the minimum drink pricing really cutting into their business.

I met a couple of friends in there one random weeknight last winter... there couldn't have been more than three or four other patrons in there, although maybe there were more at the VLTs. I was surprised, because whenever I went in there around the timeframe drew mentioned, it was always really busy. Maybe it still draws a crowd on weekends?!

It always seemed strange to me that so many people would pack into what was essentially a classic old neighbourhood pub (or "beverage room" in Manitoba parlance).

I thought why the heck would he buy the Pemby, especially for $4M. Really?! $4M! I guess he had that $9M from the Fortress land deal burning a hole in his pocket. Then I read the article and he's going to tear that place down in a few years and build something else. All is well in the universe again.

Would he really redevelop that spot? It seems hard to believe that a guy who has made a good living running drinking/music/stripper joints will suddenly get into the hotel development game, although I guess it's certainly possible.

He does have a point that the south end of the city is somewhat underserved when it comes to hotels. With the university, stadium and a large amount of residential and commercial development nearby and only maybe four decent hotels on the Pembina strip to serve all that traffic, it seems like a place where you might expect a new hotel or two to pop up.

Not sure if this has already been circulated, but I just came across this video of Winnipeg by McLean's Magazine, part of their "10 Places You've Got to See" feature.

Original accepted bid was around $4.5MM, cut it back closer to closing. This deal has been done for months. The site goes all the way to the Jubilee clover leaf, so it's definitely a large parcel. But $4MM for a bit of cashflow and a tear-down hotel? Lets just say that some people in the real estate world have, ahem, advantages others don't where it comes to value...

What's his area of expertise?

Interim city CAO Deepak Joshi has reportedly been suspended.

According to reports, Joshi was escorted out of city hall Friday afternoon.

EPC will extend it for another 30 days where they'll either reveal cause or pay him a massive severance package.

I was really surprised that the mayor said that he could only do a 3 working day suspension. I would have thought 5 working days before it had to go to EPC for review.

If Joshi leaves it will be interesting to see what the difference is in his package and Phil Sheegl's package. Apparently Sheegl got in round figures $235,000 to go away.

If its like we do at my place of employment, HR boxes your cubicle or office up and has it delivered to you by a courier company.
