To be fair, I'm used to the Vancouver Skyline. I think it's possible that me being used to it and living in the middle of the downtown core has made me bored of it so i rank others higher.

The belt line is the condo/residential portion of downtown from what I can tell wondering around it. Knowing this is the case, you can include it as part of the whole downtown picture simply because in Vancouver, we do so with the west end and Yaletown areas which to be honest, aren't really downtown at all.

In Vancouver's case, if we look at the skyline. The downtown area is the actual portion hi lighted in red.
Blue represents either urban condo's/apartments or areas which are business but not part of the real downtown.





Heres a map to show the two quite accurately (shown to scale)

Vancouver's CBD and Calgary's CBD are similarly sized in area, but Vancouver's is interspersed with dozens of residential.

Calgary's however is not. When you give Vancouver it's downtown residential periphery, it looks larger, in Calgary's case this is almost never done. Since doing this gives Vancouver an unfair advantage, I have proceeded to include the beltline in Calgary.

Add height to the Calgary red and take height away from the Vancouver red and you get the reality.

THe area you marked as residential in Calgary has considerable empty space along the railway tracks, in Eau Claire, East Village, West Village and East Victoria Park. It will be a long time before development in this area catches up to Vancouver.

i don't know how anyone looking at the Vancouver pictures above and draw a firm line between what's downtown and not (on the peninsula anyway). I think the confusion may lie in the difference between a "financial district" and surrounding downtown areas.

example, king & bay in Toronto is the financial district but cityplace or yonge/dundas is downtown. it's still all considered downtown.

Quite right. I live in Victoria Park... my view to the North is basically the CBD, my view to the East is still pretty sparse. There are a few newer towers (Guardian, Arriva, Keynote, the ones I can't remember of the name of that everyone thinks are ugly), but still lots of empty surface parking lots and the like. Once it all fills in, it will be amazing. But, we're not there yet. The East Village also has huge potential, but it's still in the early stages.

Though, raptor fellow has a valid point. Vancouver's high-rise density is configured a bit differently. Residential areas transition into offices pretty seamlessly. The downtown peninsula feels like a continuous unit. In Calgary, the CP tracks feel like a pretty hard cut-off, telling you you're leaving "downtown". The tracks aren't going anywhere, but high-rise development directly adjacent to them would definitely make the CBD and the Beltline feel like a more cohesive unit.
