At least tell me they're still going to put the fin on it. I can live with that. Yes I realize how pathetic it sounds to say "hey at least it has a fin".

Given the challenges here we can't afford to snub a building just cause it's done on a budget. also glasshouse will add to the block .. and the parkade might have a fin. Two fins!

agreed, not cookie cutter, very unique building. once the "fin" and signage goes up main floor, it'll be nice.

Alt is not bad, and it is looking better as the final details and design touches go in. I realize you could pick it apart up and down, but at the end of the day it's a solid urban building and a vast improvement over what stood there before. I'm fine with it.

Great find, Biff. First impression is that it's very good... a nice home for this collection, although certainly not a landmark. It looks almost like an appendage of the WAG, especially how it's jammed right in there next to it. I wonder if it would have benefitted from a different setting, like one of the lots on Osborne St. N. a few metres to the south? The interior looks very white and austere... clearly a literal interpretation of the arctic landscape.

Ether way, it'll be a great addition to the mall area. I wonder how far off the WAG is from breaking ground on this?

OK, I drove by the site today and I think the Maltzan expansion will look great for where it's planned... but man, it would be AMAZING if it could replace the gross Bay parkade across the street. That thing is terrible, and so far as I can tell it's mostly filled with monthly parkers in the offices nearby these days, so it's largely irrelevant to the store itself. Ah, one can dream.

It was just refurbished to the tune of tons of money. And the parking is sorely needed.

Also the Bay does not own the parkade any more. In 1987 it was sold to a private parking company.

From what I understand, 'Parkade' is almost exclusively a Canadian thing, but started here. This must be the genesis...

historical society postings somewhere i stumbled on it after i was talking about parkades to an amarican friend who had no clue wth i was talking about so i went to look up the history of the name dunno where i found it for sure as it was 5 years ago

An article in the Free Press earlier this summer had this interesting anecdote:

Nah, they use it all over Canada. I've parked in 'parkades' in both Toronto and Vancouver at the very least.

It would be nice if they could cover the exterior of the Bay Parkade in some kind of screen like at Target Field in Minneapolis. The Bay structure looks so old and worn.

The Bay parkade is very useful, but it makes my heart sad. What a truly hideous structure. Words do not describe the level of fugly that it achieves, placed no less directly across from the WAG, on the very visible and important Memorial Boulevard, nary a stone's throw from some special monuments to heros, and our scintillating provincial legislature, and much underrated Archives.

I'd cover it in posters of the upcoming performers at the WECC if I could. Anything. Short of smearing feces on it, I'm not sure how it could be worse.

It looks so old and worn that a screen might be enough to send the whole thing crashing down. It looks downright scary along Vaughan Street... on the rare occasions that I park in that thing anymore, it's the top deck only for me!

Pothole riddled gravel surface parking lot comings to mind.

I still strongly feel Winnipeg truly missed a huge opportunity. The Bay building and parkade were one of the shortlisted sites for the Hydro building. While the block it ended up on was needing attention of its own the smaller, multi-building nature of that block would have seen things happen there. Hydro tacking over the Bay site would have addressed the eye-sore of a parkade and helped save an important building to the history of country.
