I am hoping it's just the camera that makes it look like that - but holy — that is ugly.

I usually try to be positive about building designs, but that remodel looks particularly awful. I don't believe I've ever seen a building with a camouflage color scheme before.

Your right! That's exactly what it is. It reminds me of an Army Surplus Store for some reason. I'm usually very positive, and I don't think there's anything wrong with the building design itself, but that whole color scheme on that particular size of mass is bizarre. Like Comrade, I hope it's just the camera's fault, because I don't get the same repulsion from the new olive green on the Marriott. Maybe it's just the camera darkening the olive. I'm afraid though that that palette was the wrong direction to go for that size and height of a tower.

I don't think its THAT bad. I would assume that there was SOME type of consumer feedback on the color. Who knows. Lol. Anyhow maybe it will look better in the sun.

LOL, That would be a relief Dallas, if it's just a little bit of sunlight that it needs. The skies do look pretty overcast.

While I was in town, I took a picture of the large mural on the newly completed mixed-use housing project on 600 west and north temple, but I'm having trouble posting it. Anybody nearby care to get a pic and post it for us forumers. It's an interesting art piece.

I have pictures of the mural from this December post.

Even Khrushchev would not be happy, he would prefer it to be cement gray.

IMO the color is not the worst part. What I don't like is what they did with the new rooms where the glass elevator use to be. The windows are placed where the entrance to the old elevator use to be but they kept the old elevator shaft creating an awkward space between the window and the outside of the building. I hope that is not permanent?
This looks worse from the inside because the rooms that should have the best views from the hotel have walls blocking your peripheral vision.
However, overall I still think it's an improvement over the Shilo Inn.

I like it. The colors aren't very common and it actually is a clean design. The bricks are covered up so it no longer looks like its made out of mud bricks. I think people un realistic expectations about the this project. It was the shilo inn. There is only so much that can be done. Its a good thing companies are investing downtown....I dont care if some consider the projects sub par... its still a sub par project down town and not in suburbia. Not every project is going to be world class. I like it.

I'll have to see it with my own eyes before I really judge it. I've gotta say, the inversion makes everything look uglier, so that's not helping anything. It looks like they got rid of the old corrugated concrete look that was on the outside of the Shilo, and I appreciate that.

And, having stayed at my share of Holiday Inn Expresses (yay education budgets) I like their business model of renovating buildings like this. This building was never going to be a diamond, but now it's at least like...a rock instead of a turd? Even though the color...

Anyway. I kind of prefer this to a demolition and new build of something of a similar height. Glad for the change. And, I kind of like that it's that horrible green instead of beige. Because we've got a lot of beige.

How is beige even a word? "Beeeeeiggggge." Ridiculous.

Beige.

Agreed. It isn't all that bad and I've stayed at my share of Holiday Inn Expresses too(yay cinnamon rolls). Having lived in Utah for a couple of decades now the army surplus mixed use theme seems strangely appropriate though.

Will the Mormon church office building ever get a new skin? I was thinking that it might be the most our dated sky rise in Salt Lake now.

Also Comrade, and Stenar, you two are so negative and such complainers. Lighten up. Of course you'll probably just say that we don't understand what a true critic is or if we lived in New York you would be basing things off facts, or blah blah blah. By saying those things you are just making up excuses and trying to cover up your true negativity. It's fine to have a strong opposing opinion but when all you do is rip, complain, bash, curse, and hate on everything and on a culture, it becomes extremely old and tiring. Nobody here is impressed with your "different point of view" because all it is is negativity and hate.

Other than that though I agree completely, the reason the bones of Arrow Press Square are worn out and decaying is because the — hole owners what as you said, bought it for cheap, have a loss on their books each year and are hoping that the CCH will be built there. Yes their site is right across the street from the Salt Palace, but I have no idea how they think there location will be picked. The APS property alone cannot accommodate what the CCH needs even if it where to go 50 stories high.

When I saw those two owners talking I wanted to punch both of them square in the jaw, like whoa are we, our building is in horrible condition and there's nothing we can do about it. — HOLES.
My thoughts exactly.
