Interesting - thanks! I guess the idea about non-market rentals will not go over very well with the locals...

i noticed yesterday that the city put protective fencing around the street trees at helmcken/seymour. they must be prepping to demolish the current building. this is what is planned for the site-

Well, if we want to eliminate our city's greatest embarrassment and restore our city's greatest neighbourhood (the DTES), social housing is going to have to be spread around more evenly. Although I believe it is still too concentrated, focusing mostly on the Metro Core.

Seriously. 3 of the 4 corners of that one intersection is social housing. Has anyone told the city that more units could be built on less expensive land ??

For what it's worth, 1107 Seymour (pictured above) is a privately-created rental building for lower-income residents, making it a quasi-social housing development. The project also will contain about 20,000 ft2 of office space.

1107 Seymour 'lands' the CACs from 1300 Richards and the City 'topped up' the remaining balance out of its area non-market CAC fund.

Are the NIMBYs still challenging this in court?

I say NIMBY sarcastically since there's already plenty (too much) social housing in this area. It should be spread further around the City and Metro region.

I agree that too much has been concentrated in the DTES, and to a lesser degree the 'new' Yaletown / Downtown South / Burrard Slopes area, but when a project, such as 1107 Seymour, is CAC-funded, it must be built in the vicinity of where the CACs are exacted.

Too much social housing? What are you implying exactly?

Read my post again. I'm not implying anything, I'm saying it clearly.

Perhaps instead of creating more social housing and shelters in Vancouver they could spread it out like to Richmond or out towards Marine Drive and Boundary or Arbutus and Marine. The city is concentrating too much social housing in the downtown core and false creek which is a problem in itself.
