Why would you equate Spain being in debt directly with Repsol? It is a private global company. Made 200mil profit last year says wikipedia.

Repsol's Calgary office will likely become a Canadian regional office which is not a win for AC. Especially their flights to Asia - where the concentration of Talisman's recent operations are- those jobs that are HQ based and require travel will soon be made from new people out of Repsol's headquarters in Madrid likely (audit, BD, execs, etc). The most global E&P company headquartered out of Calgary is soon to be gone. Not saying they were filling up planes but there were many times I would be heading over to NRT and conversed with a Talisman employee or two in J. Yyc was a "hub" for Talisman and will now be a spoke for the new owners.

When their new overlords come to Calgary from Madrid they will probably take Iberia/BA (based at MAD). IB is partnered with BA so that may help BA with J loads. The Star Alliance terminal out of Madrid is horrid while the IB terminal is gorgeous.

Extremely unlikely that happens at any point in the foreseeable future.

Working against BA/IB is the UK fuel and carbon taxes on aviation, front cabin traffic makes is about $700 more expensive than other European hubs. Cheapest and fastest option is AC on MAD-YYZ-YYC.

Certainly Repsol has an agreement with Iberia to fly with them. That is the case with Total and Air France-KLM. Total pushed hard for the KLM flight that has clearly worked for them. The reason they went AMS instead of CDG is to capitalize on the Shell employees.

No way Total SA was the market maker for YYC-AMS. Total would have to commit 30-40 people per day to justify their request. Total is also based in Paris and Pau, France; not AMS. Shell would also hav to commit serious resources to make YYC-AMS work. 1/2 the shell operation was based in London.

KLM chose YYC for a variety of reasons and not just because of shell, total, or any other group of companies. Expanded international aviation market out of YYC was a probably a bigger factor in attracting KLM. Also AF-KLM chose the KLM brand because it is the economy class focused airline, AF was and is too upmarket for YYC in particular and canada in general. However AF is moving down market to match the sucess at KLM.

You are bang on. One of the things Calgary had going for it in the 1990s was a significant international business operating out of head offices of medium sized O&G companies. Things were much worse for Edmonton in those days as that city traditionally has depended on local activity. Despite the benefits of the Foreign capital, I do worry about the implications of CNOOC, Total and Repsol ownership during a downturn for white collar Calgary.

I fly both quite frequently. They are both US mainstream airlines. I don't know why but I do like Alaska better than Delta or United. I like Delta better than United.

Horizon is a Q400 aircraft, very similar to Jazz or Encore. The one difference is they usually pick a micro brew and wine on each flight that they serve as a complimentary beverage. It I a share the Victoria to Seattle flight is to short for a beverage service.

Seattle is not a bad airport to transfer. The underground people mover can require a few minutes to catch sometimes.

I'd take Alaska / Horizon over pretty well any US airline. The Horizon micro brew is a nice feature (was Nikasi Total Domination for a while, but swaps out frequently). The Seattle - Anchorage run also just seems more spacious and humane than most american flying experiences. SEA (don't need to spell out that code, I suspect) is fairly decent as well.

I have an absolute hate on for United. Probably entirely personal and potentially irrational, but I feel they earned it over many years of aerial abuse.

Thanks guys, nice to get some info on both airlines and SEA, since I will be transiting through Seattle to Hong Kong. Flying the Q400 & A332. Can't experience a micro brew or wine though (I'm a minor!)
I also absolutely hate United. Had to fly 17 hours a few years back on United from SFO-HKG. Was horrible.

What airlines serve direct to Varadero, Cuba? And if anyone knows a better place to find out that info other than YYC's website, it would be great to know.

I'd say we're (specifically Johnny Aussie, et al.) a more reliable source... given that any one can edit Wikipedia the number of rumoured routes I've seen on Wiki airport pages is absurd.

Transat and Sunwing definitely do. I'm not too sure if either Air Canada or WestJet are operating Varadero direct out of Calgary this winter.
