Ottawa has the best example of the illogical "self-competition" that I've seen - a Best Buy
immediately across a small, low-volume street from Future Shop.
The Best Buy was under construction when Best Buy bought Future Shop in 2001. Most assumed that they would close the Future Shop, or back out of the Best Buy location. They didn't - and they continue to operate both stores. There are several situations like this across Canada (wikipedia lists 9 with both stores in the same mall, or within "close proximity").
A friend who is on the Best Buy western management team told me that until recently, these were truly operated as two completely independant operations... they didn't let each other know about promotions, nor did they purchase jointly.
