According to Farrow Dreessen on Twitter https://twitter.com/FarrowDreessen

"city udrp didn't like it; they want it made less interesting and w/fewer details"

I think that is south, but you are right about the blank wall. Not sure why.

^ If that is true, then I give up and don't wanna live on this earth anymore... It's almost like saying "It's too nice, please make it more ugly and shabby so it matches its neighbours on Bank St" -___-

If true then everyone on that city panel needs to be terminated, immediately.

They assume the older building fronting Bank Street will be torn down and redeveloped at some point.

Because they aren't allowed to, being as that wall is at the lot-line. As previously mentioned the neighbouring building may get replaced with something taller and will abut this wall.

Can one developer send an artist to habitat for humanity to pick up some tiles and build a mosaic on one of these walls? Or something...

Anyway, the bundling looks good, but the whole faux-historic deal can sometimes produce less than attractive results.

I like the fact that the design is detail focused! Far too little modern architecture focuses on the details in the building, and details give much more character in my opinion.

Yup, and I might be a bit of a cynic, but even if it's done well, it's not right. I was disappointed to learn that most of Sussex Drive buildings are knock offs.

Wow, what a joke...I guess city hates interesting looking buildings?

For past projects, most of the architects on the panels were flown in from Toronto.

Let's think critically about this for a second. I mean, it is coming from the architects twitter account. Is this the exact quote from the UDRP or are the architects upset with the panel's criticism of the design?

"Less interesting and w/ fewer details"? Sounds like an interpretation more then an actual quote. I doubt the UDRP asked for something less interesting. Either way, I find this proposal very mundane and exactly what is wrong with many Ottawa buildings. The faux historicist look is awful. You can respect the character of the neighbourhood without being superficial which I feel this proposal is being.

Heritage committee OK's NCC's plan for 7 Clarence

Matthew Pearson, Ottawa Citizen
Published on: March 27, 2015, Last Updated: March 27, 2015 12:13 PM EDT

Ottawa’s built-heritage subcommittee has endorsed the National Capital Commission’s latest plan to replace a ByWard Market heritage building, which was torn down last year after engineers ruled the 135-year-old structure was “clearly beyond the point of reconstruction.”

The NCC needed the subcommittee’s approval because the new building at 7 Clarence St. will be physically attached to a large stone heritage building at 461-465 Sussex Dr., and because the property is located in the ByWard Market Heritage Conservation District.

There was huge neighbourhood outcry in 2014, both at the news that 7 Clarence had to be demolished, and at the initial “glass box” design for a replacement building.

But after extensive consultation with neighbours and heritage advocates, the NCC and its architect — CSV Architects of Ottawa — came up with a design that was generally well-received.

The building is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2016 and is to include reclaimed stone on the front of the main level, with possible replica stone on a side that adjoins a lane.

The second level is to be clad in thin slabs of limestone. The corner of the building will be glass on both levels: clear on the ground floor and patterned on the second to relate to the texture of the limestone.

It is slated for use as a temporary exhibition space for the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation in 2017.

Detail from rendering of six-storey building planned for Bank and Lisgar streets. Ground floor will be retail; upper floors will be condominiums.

The subcommittee also approved construction of a new, six-storey building at the southeast corner of Bank and Lisgar streets.

Designed by Farrow Dreessen Architects, the mixed-use building would have retail on the ground floor and 22 condominiums above.

The city issued a demolition permit late last year for the one-storey building that previously occupied the site without heritage approval, the committee heard.

Demolition of buildings located in heritage conversation districts require council’s approval under the Ontario Heritage Act; however, due to a “mapping error,” the permit was issued without heritage approval.

The former building on the site did not have any special heritage attributes and the department had no concerns with its removal, the committee heard. The department is working to address the mapping error.

Title should have "Joyce House" added? (It's what they're calling the building.)
