Really? You must have never been on skytrain east of Metrotown then. It is very noticible from any decent south east facing viewpoint. I looked at it everyday from the Canada Line at Marine station.

Um, yes. I saw Mountains. But they never soared over the horizon like Mount Doom. I realized it was a telephoto shot.

Yes, and if you look carefully you can see Seattle on the right side. (Kidding)

It is actually Mt Baker, courteous of telephoto lens compression.

Mt Baker's form is unmistakable. It is a classic composite volcano. It is the only massive mountain in the entire southeast view. Again, anywhere with a decent southeast view it is highly dominant (obviously not to the telephoto level in the pic above, but still very clear).

Baker really does loom...but really only when you are around Abbotsford/Mission. Still very visible on the horizon from many vantage points in Vancouver, even from Victoria...truly a massive mountain. And dormant. One day, she could blow sky-high like Mt. St. Helens.

It will be quite a show. Luckily (for Van) areas to the east of Baker will get most of the ash, and areas south of the 49th border will get all of the lahars.

At first I didn't notice Vancouver's skyline was in there as well. Toronto buildings do dwarf those in Vancouver, one's in Hong Kong or Shanghai would show an even wider discrepancy.
