Was Monday's Fire in Downtown L.A. an 'Architectural Hate Crime'?

The destroyed building was to be the latest mega-complex by a detested local developer.

I suspect you're joking but I wouldn't want to live that close to a freeway.

Oh —, my burning of Palmer's building made it to the news?

Haha, but no really. I figured it was some homeless dude who heard about his hate towards homeless or some — using steel wool.

Agreed, I second that thought.

The buildings do seem to be falling in an interesting manner

Nice photos last page DTLADenizen

A few more on Olympic/Hill: first, that well liked entrance

The Hill side is looking pretty decent on the first floor. Once those trees mature some and the retail bays (which are mainly glass and pretty nice) fill it's gonna be a nice block.

Construction continues on the adjacent Olympic building

This one isn't the worst one ever, that's for sure. The Hill St side isn't too bad, it creates a nice urban feel. But I seriously prefer the white Hill St section to the brown and yellow and anything on the Olympic side. All the different materials and colors and bump/cut outs - it's all just too much and trying way too hard. I guess the architects are trying to break up what is a horizontally large building, but this doesn't work aesthetically for me. I also hate that tan/yellow thing that's so prominent here. Just because it's kinda dry doesn't mean this has to be the color. This isn't Falling Water after all.

mm, I'm not so sure that kind of unfriendly, wannabe historic and closed so-called Da Vinci building is anything particularly 'Italianate' nowadays, though. No matter how cosmopolitan, LA is still English-speaking, huh? Well, you can see sometimes... They certainly wouldn't build anything like that in Italy when they've got the original historic —.

LA Downtown news has an article on the redo of the Ford Motor Car factory at 7th and Sante Fe in the AD. Street level with retail with creative office space above.

/\ /\ I honestly wish every major thoroughfare in the city was lined with something looking like that. Gorgeous.

Do I spy the oculus??

Also, are they planning to knock out the center of the indents like they have a bit on the north side of the facade? I hope so. That would make a serious difference.

When I was walking by the oculus thing on the front seemed a lot smaller than in the renderings. It will be good to get the sidewalk back...

In terms of knocking out any more of the panels, I think what we see is what it is. They'd have left the scaffolding up if they were going to do that I think.

New buildings at La Kretz campus are above ground level.

Arts District Park, next to my favorite restaurant Urth Caffe, is officially groundbreaking this Saturday with host Jose Huizar.

This Tumblr site has some renderings:

Regent Theater opened recently and I saw hundreds of people waiting in line for something today. Great to see this already active part of downtown improving.

Construction going on in a retail space in Spring Arcade Building. I don't remember seeing any new announcement, does anyone know?

Rosslyn Theatre hasn't lit up their blade sign in a while. I wonder if the lighting was temporary just for that day or if they're trying to fix it.

A few misc photos from noon

I love the Christmas decorations from the Last Bookstore to 4th and Main area.

Looks like the Mack Urban project on Pico and Olive is UC. The site was fenced off with heavy equipment on it.

Not sure who would want to live that close to the freeway anyways.
