Didn't we lose RSL and the Living Planet Aquarium under Rocky? Both are major fails. Also, wasn't it also under his mayorship that local government agencies, like Division of Services for Blind and Visually Imparied among many others, who had their presence downtown end up being moved to various office park canpuses?

Blaming Rocky for losing RSL is like crediting Rocky for winning the Olympics. Rocky fought like hell to keep RSL within SLC's borders, even proposing the fairpark site - but the legislature killed the deal when they revamped RDA funding for sports complexes (then mysteriously did an about face when, a couple years later, RSL needed the same $$$ to build out in Sandy).

Never said he didn't try, but he was disliked and loved. Divisive Mayors tend not to get things done. As has already been said, SLC was pubished by the legislator because of him. He was mayor during some of the best economic years in this country, abd could've had more to show for it if he had a different personality.

Funny thing is, I agree with a lot of his politics, but from a development/economic standpoint, I don't want him as mayor again.

The legislature hates Salt Lake City because it doesn't bend to its conservative philosophy. They're vindictive — who didn't want SLC to get the stadium.

Rocky or not - they were going to do everything in their power to snub their nose at the capital city.

Can we just like trade Davis county for Boulder or something? Forcibly move them here? That would be nice

Rocky Anderson is a divisive, vindictive, egotistical man. He certainly accomplished some good for the city but he created a City Hall atmosphere filled with constant fear and dread. The turnover rate for the city according to HR has drastically fallen since Ralph Becker became Mayor. Ok there's my opinion.

With regard to opening the main library 24/7. This proposal literally makes zero sense to me. I agree that there may be some night owls out there that may benefit from later hours but unfortunately I don't think that they will be the ones utilizing the library all night. I think this will only reinforce and invigorate the illegal activities that are occurring in and around Library Square already. It will also continue to hammer down the notion that the main library is not for the regular citizens of SLC but simply for those that are homeless and those that prey on the homeless.

Bingo. If the goal as stated is to provide an overnight shelter for homeless teens, I don't think this is going to do it. I know they're saying they're budgeting in extra staff and security, but I don't see it being adequate. I'd rather see the city put $300,000 toward a new facility, renovating an empty building, funding new programs...turning the library into a homeless shelter is a travesty.

And I'm not the one saying we should bus the homeless out of the city or put them in a wood chipper or whatever some of you are saying. It's a serious problem that should be addressed with compassion; I don't think this initiative is the best use of the library, but I don't think it's the best way to provide services to the homeless either. Find another way.

How about we just end homelessness on some state WPA ish? We can start a state bank like Northh Dakota for it, and have the homeless working for the homeless building apartments or condos. Jobs and housing, problem solved.

So..we could become a city where the trains stop running at 11:00pm, bars stop serving at 1:00am, clubs close at 2:00am but the library is open 24/7.

Rocky was probably Salt Lake's best mayor and it's because he was aggressive, egotistical and not afraid to ruffle feathers. In many regards, so was Deedee because that type of leadership is bold and pushes progress that almost certainly doesn't get done with tepid, quiet administrations.

I'd probably vote Becker over Anderson but I wouldn't be opposed to him returning as mayor - if only to watch the non-Salt Lakers freak the — out. lol

The new city library and Gateway Mall were both approved during Corradini's tenure. She fought hard with the railroads to move the tracks to make Gateway possible. Corradini has been the most successful mayor SLC has had in modern times.

Corradini was very influential in SLC getting the Olympics. We'd already been awarded them before Rocky was in office. The reason SLC won the Olympics had little to do with bribes.

The reason Rocky lost RSL is specifically because he pushed so hard for the Fairpark location when Checketts wanted a location downtown. Rocky didn't favor a downtown location.

I know this discussion is tongue-in-cheek, but after spending Thanksgiving in Boulder I've seen first hand how much sprawl there is on the Front Range, particularly in-between Denver and Boulder. IMO the CO sprawl is much worse than on the Wasatch Front. Boulder is awesome, but it's an anomaly for Colorado- I'd pick Utah for overall smarter growth any day.

denver and the front range aren't comparatively sprawling to something like Houston or Minneapolis - rather, the Wasatch Front is very dense. The Salt Lake Valley is small compared to the space occupied by Denver.

Huh? The Denver Metro Area has about 300 people per square mile while the Salt Lake Metro has about 100 people per square mile, both densities are skewed by having huge tracts of unpopulated land in their MSA's. Both are fairly sprawl-y places. It's just that Denver sprawls like an amorphous blog while Salt lake sprawls linearly. Plus the Denver Metro MSA has 2.5M miserable — while the Salt Lake City MSA has 1.13M miserable —.

I'd prefer the linear sprawl, it just doesn't feel as oppressive as the blob kind.
