Has anyone heard of or have any news regarding the CCH?
It's been a while since we last heard of anything.

I heard something about the library switchin to being opened 24/7... I hope this is not true... Such a waste of tax dollars... It will be mostly homeless people who will go there to sleep... I really don't like the idea of turning our beautiful library into a de facto homeless shelter... Nor do I want to pay for it... Hopefully somebody in legislation acts to defund this... I wouldn't mind the library being open later but I don't think that it needs to be open 24 hours a day.... I might be okay with it being done on a trial basis and if there's a huge demand for it then okay... But if it's just homeless people sleeping in there..,. Forget it... If they need a bigger homeless shelter they should build one in West valley ;-)

Instead of turning Hollywood connection in to a call center the state Shoul give west valley development subsidies in exchange for turnin the building into a homeless shelter... We can put a liquor store right there... An then mov ll the drunken homeless out of down town.... This would make way for great redevelopment in our states capital.

Why do you have to pick on West Valley?
Sandy is building two 25 story high rises they can be moved to.

I think the most infuriating part of the library is that when I go there every single computer is full. EVERY DAMN ONE! I can't do any work because of them. Want to print? Wait 6 hrs to print because there are 500 other people waiting to watch videos for the next 2 hrs. And the problem can't be fixed without buying another 500 computers or being blatantly discriminatory towards them. And it smells awful too. A sweaty — steeped in a sweaty arm pit and let outside to rot in the sun for 5 days. The City library needs to find a way to kick homeless people out of the library because it's scaring people like families and even regular people like me from going there to enjoy a book. And I don't even think homeless people are bad - I've helped with Family Promise and I've also worked with an advocacy team on affordable housing in the valley. Some of the homeless people have harassed me after I've asked for a computer "because it's their right to have one". You aren't really wrong, but you're an — too. I need to get work done. Just go pick up a damn book and go read.

It gets even worse. it sounds like the reason that they are doing this is so that homeless people have a safe place to go at night. The ability for patrons to go in and get a book late at night is just a side thought. The cost of this program is $650,000 a year.... I've got two words for you... F*** that. Our public library is not a freaking homeless shelter... Nor should it be!

It sounds like the city Council will be taking public comment next week before voting on it... I have never attended such an event but will likely attend this one...

Why can't we build a civic center for the homeless people to go to do stuff during the day? It doesn't even have to be big

Because apparently it makes more sense to turn our public library into an out right homeless shelter the cost of $650,000 per year to the city... We already pay taxes to support the library and can't even feel comfortable going there because of the current homeless situation... And now they want us to pay $650,000 more per year to make the problem even worse... I don't think so!!!

I actually think we need to go in the opposite direction and mandate some sort of anti-intoxication or dress code to reduce the current problem.

Instead of using $650,000 a year for a three-year pilot program... Why don't we just spend one year of that and build a facility somewhere (not in downtown Salt Lake) where these people can sleep... It can rely on volunteer and community service.

The problem is not a place to sleep. Many of these people sleep at shelters or are transitioning in to housing. The problem is having some place to do stuff at during the day. The shelters are awful places to be and and there is nothing to do during the day. These people don't have jobs to go to or houses to do stuff at, so they go to the library. That's why we need a separate homeless center. A place where people can play, work, and learn. We could build a center to consolidate all of the homelessness action people and resources in to one place with some place for the homeless people to go during the day. If you purchase, say, 150 low end computers, a book collection, etc. and put it in a safe, clean environment, people will flock to it. Add in some showers and a laundry facility, etc. and some emergency beds and you are good to go. Pay people to help in the center (clean, stock, other work) so they have some sort of base. Get people off the streets and in to some place that gives them both entertainment and a chance. Once the center is built (which I repeat is not a shelter), the city can get people out of the library who don't really need to be there so the library can be a better place and the homeless people get a chance. The problem is money - people are stingy about helping those lower than them even though many of them are Christians who won't even bother to read the bible, which states that you should help homeless people (not in those words, though). Others are people who just brush it off because they are too cheap to pay what probably equals 20 dollars a year for them to get people off of the streets.

Are there examples from other cities to go by in terms of activity centers for homeless people?

I hope you will attend AjiuO, and give them an ear full. Sounds like there must be some kind of Federal Government kickback or subsidy going to the library to encourage them to do this. Is there a particular Council member/members pushing this agenda?

I live down town and grew up here as well... I have been dealing with the homeless people a very long time... The problem is that most of the homeless people walking the streets are drunks and druggies... I am not willing to pay 20$ a year to give them anything... There are a lower population out there who are not substance abusers... I do think that we should help them... But not by giving them incentives to stay homeless... We need to help them get jobs so that they can help themselves or at least partly help them selves... Almost anyone can work. There is a guy that works at century 16 in sandy who takes tickets... He is in a wheel chair and can barley move his body... I see this guy working and then I get disgusted by all of the perfectly physically capable people sitting on the streets... A lot of them choosing to give their life to drugs and alcohol... And I certainly don't want them in our library all the time.

I'm telling you... Hollywood connection is closing down let's move them all there... We can even leave some of the recreational facilities intact... They won't bother anybody over in the Decker Lake area.
