The information about the same company that is renovating the Shilo having purchased land nearby is very intriguing. If the info that they will be building a larger parking structure on the current site, but between the two seems to only make sense that the recently purchased parcel would be the parking lot north of the Peery. As the old SLC High School Building, (Inferno, Christophers) is on the historic register and probably isn't coming down. So the parking lot makes sense.

Hopefully they will put at least one retail location in the base of the parking garage, preferably on Pierpont, one on both Pierpont and W. Temple would be even better. The addition of a new hotel on the empty parking lot would be a great compliment to the urban fabric of both streets. If would feel in a "missing tooth" as some planners refer to empty lots.

County seeks interest in developing new Downtown D.A. building site

October 28 2014
500 South Main Street property by the Courthouse
http://slco.org/mayor/news/county-seeks-interest-in-developing-new-da-building-site/

Salt Lake County, UT– Mayor Ben McAdams says a new procurement offering that seeks to identify private-sector interest in developing downtown acreage that will include a new District Attorney’s office building is now available. The “District Attorney Office Building and Site Development Request for Information” has been released by the county’s Contracts and Procurement office.

“We acquired the ideal property, adjacent to the Matheson Courthouse, for construction of a new building to house the District Attorney’s office. Owning the building, rather than continuing to lease space, will save county taxpayers millions of dollars,” said McAdams. “The 3.11 acre parcel has room for additional development and we are going out to the private market for ideas about how to maximize its potential.”

McAdams noted that RFIs are commonly used by federal, state and local government. He said potential developers are typically willing to provide information in order to learn more about the proposed project. McAdams said that the RFI highlights the county’s view of the project as a potential “public-private partnership” that leverages the downtown location near a transit stop and the opportunity to create a mixed-use development on the block.

McAdams said interested parties may get a copy of the RFI and submit their contact information to Teresa Young, in the Contracts and Procurement office either through the mail or by email to [email protected], no later than December 3, 2014, at 2 p.m.

That parcel is zoned D-1. I think a public-private partnership is good thinking on the County's park. It will allow the parcel to be much better utilized for the zoning. Maybe they could do a mixed use, retail, bottom floor, commercial next 10-15 floors (part DA part leasable), residential next 5-10 floors.

Sounds like we could get some kind of office tower out of this.

Not a fan of the reflective replacement windows on a historic building. Hopefully the finishing treatments will more traditional and history appropriate. Seeing those reflective windows I just think of the bad refurbs downtown in the 70s and 80s with the copper colored reflective windows. A couple of bad examples on 200 south on 200 and 300 W come to mind.

The reflection could still be the camera, but all those windows have their new stickers on them; so they're new.

I was just about to say the same thing. They're definitely new windows.

I think it's just the angle of the sun in the sky. If you look at the picture of Neumont, some of the windows have reflections and others don't. Another building is blocking the sun on the one's that do not have a reflection.

Air quality woes snuff New Year's fireworks
By The Associated Press KSL.com

"Instead, the city council and the nonprofit Downtown Alliance want to create a giant disco ball and unveil it at midnight. They're asking for donations to help fund the $50,000 project."

More on KSL.com....
http://www.ksl.com/?sid=32303092&nid=148...snuff-new-years-fireworks&s_cid=queue-16

I like this. Yes I know it's copying New York City, but growing up every year watching the New Year's eve countdown on TV and seeing Time Square I always wanted something like this here in Salt Lake. I say, go for it.

Warning, don't read the comments on Ksl.com. A lot of people are whining about this and a lot are making threats of boycotting downtown.

Here's the link to the kickstarter page,

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/634252315/uss-largest-disco-ball-clean-air-fireworks-alterna

I think it's a great idea to think about the pollution, but with the available technology today, I just don't disco balls are 'cool' anymore.
It's too late now, but what about those 3D projections done on the side of buildings?

Here's one if you don't know what I'm talking about,

Is one annual fireworks display really going to contribute that much to air pollution or is this more about making a political statement? How much does one fire works display contribute compared to one new building over the course of a year?..and all the heavy machinery needed during the construction?

..that said, the disco ball is kind of a cool idea.

I toured the Zims rehab today and will have a post next week about what is happening with the site. It is an amazing space and I am glad it has been preserved.

Post on the 1400 South Apartments, in the Ballpark neighborhood. The Ballpark apartments go before the city planning commission tomorrow. It is nice to see new development is this area.

Down Town Salt Lake

Drove to downtown yesterday for business. There was a large excavator at the former Sizzler sight. Looks like that project is about ready to get started.

I've said this before. Salt Lake's downtown is small from a high rise perspective. I think downtown will have 'arrived' as a "major" downtown only upon having 3-4 buildings that are 1.5 to 2 times the height of the Wells Fargo Tower, or another 6-8 high-rises that are of the same height as Wells Fargo. Neither will happen in my lifetime. I am age 44. Wish I was proven wrong.

Feel free to flame away at my opinion.

Street engagement is where its at - portland from a high rise perspective, portland is meh, but when you think of downtown Portland, you think of an awesome, progressively planned pedestrian paradise. Plus, in SLC, we have a huge mountainous backdrop. I'd like to see more highrises but not at the expense of street level retail and transit.
