Just turn the Gateway into a homeless housing project.

I think adding a grocery store to the Gateway is a great idea but it will be a tough sell. Most grocery stores these days are connected to large national companies and unless you fit their exact schematics and expectations they won't get near it. I think the only way you will see something there is if a local company steps up.

I don't love the Alta Gateway project but I do like that the corner there is being developed. As of now, when you drive west of the Gateway, it looks like no-man's land. Having a building there not only builds vibrancy but helps create a sense of safety and may help to eliminate the perception that the Gateway is a barrier and that there's nothing west and never will be. Also, you can't complain about a 33.6 million dollar investment into a neighborhood.

You don't by chance have any renderings or site plans of Alta Gateway, don't know where. In Ecological Urban Design at the U, we are working on a project on the 6 blocks behind the Gateway and Rio Grande Depot. I'd love to have an idea on how this integrates into the neighborhood.

Here is a link to the planning documents from December 2013.

Type of residential architecture I wish SLC would adopt over what we're generally getting (see Alta Gateway):

Not saying all should be like this - but damn I wish we had some more diversity and a bit more glass.

I think it's a nice addition to that part of town, and the design is decent. At least it won't be the crappy faux stone and stucco apartments that are going up all over the place across the railroad tracks(what's the name? Bridge apartments or citifront apartments at Gateway??). They've added a mid-block pedestrial link also. I am worried that the main level residential units facing 500 West are too close to the street edge and have no buffer. They look like they are right up to the sidewalk edge.

Mixed-use building coming to 11th and 13th. I really like the design of this one.

The news was just talking about giving grant money to businesses on North Temple to renovate... I'll have to look back and see if you guys of arty talked about this... That's probably great news for some of the buildings there are some of them that I wish they would just tear down now

I have preached this every since City Creek Center was announced, Gateway needs to cater to their neighborhood, their neighborhood being not only the Gateway District but downtown, N. Temple and Marmalade.

Megaplex is currently the only theater in Salt Lake City (the employees at Sugarhouse 10 weren't sure if it was going to change to first run, or if it was simply a major update but still discount movies), and with a major renovation will be that much better and will compete better with Century, in SSL. The addition of Game works will bring a few new people, but many burbanites won't simply choose Gateway on a regular basis, because aside from a couple of things, mostly museums, they can get everything else closer to home.

So yes the Gateway should continue to add new retail stores, and some entertainment options, such as a bowling alley, but differentiate the bowling alley and gear it to the downtown resident, and make it a once or twice a year type of attraction for burbanites, something along the lines of Jupiter Bowl in Kimball Junction, something upscale, not simply another all star lanes. Then work on getting a drug store, and a small grocery store, not a grocery store for all of peoples needs but a store that serves most peoples regular needs. Put those two new features in along with a new access to 500 W and that's a solid new northern half of The Gateway.

The theater in sugar house is owned by Cinemark the same company who owns century 16. It is being converted in to a luxury theater similar to what was done to the AMC in Layton.... They also have long delayed plans for downtown... They origonly wanted gateway... My guess is that they have been waiting to see if they got the lease renewal befor moving forward with a new project.

So I'm confused. Is that "Forum" thing what was submitted for the CCH? and if it was the only developer interested... won't they get it buy default? I don't think it looks bad but wish they could kick up the office tower by about 10 floors.

No "The Forum" was not submitted as a proposal for the CCH.

Omni Hotels and Resorts based out of Dallas was the only submitted a proposal before the RFP deadline.

Also to answer your other question ajiuO, just because Omni was the only developer to submit doesn't automatically make them the developer for the CCH. The proposal must be reviewed and if it doesn't meet the requirements set forth by the county, then they (the county) will have to start the process over and eventually submit a revised RFP. That could set the CCH back, I would estimate, another six months to a year or so; however, I trust that Omni's proposal is solid and will be officially chosen in the next couple of months.

Pardon Our Dust: Abravanel Hall Plaza Construction

Traci Grant - October

http://www.utahsymphony.org/blog/2014/10/pardon-our-dust-abravanel-hall-plaza-construction/

The plaza in front of Abravanel Hall is getting a much needed makeover this year. Most of the concrete and the fountain in the front will be removed to make way for new greenery, sidewalks and walkways. The new plans call for better lighting and sign fixtures as well as grey and white concrete with accents in warm tones including browns and gold.

Abravanel Hall Courtyard

This does mean that access to the plaza and east entrance to the lobby will be cut off until Spring 2015. A safety fence will stretch along South Temple, West Temple and the lawn, removing access through the front doors. Fortunately, there’s more than one way to enter Abravanel Hall. There are three entrances to the lobby of Abravanel Hall. To enter directly into the lobby and bypass the congestion at the ticket office, go up the stairs near the ticket office and enter through the doors on the lobby’s west side. Another option is the main entrance to the ticket office, which can be found on the north side, with access from South Temple. If you already have your tickets and want to avoid the stairs by taking the elevator, we recommend going down the alley on the west side of the building entering through the west doors. The UTA Temple Square Trax stop is located right across from Abravanel Hall and there is a crosswalk to the west that will take you directly to the entrances which will be open. If you have difficulties walking or navigating, we suggest that you park near the Salt Palace or at the Plaza Hotel.

That's a fantastic design, one of the nicest new small buildings I've seen proposed recently.

Also, rooftop dining.

I really like that rendering for the Kingfisher Development... I could totally imagine that upper floor as an ultra-hip urban 4-bedroom flat, perfect for my family...

It's a nice design, but very rigid. There's no direct paved path to the door. People will be cutting through the grass in their heels and nice shoes or go very awkwardly around the grass in one of the diagonal paths. This is when the community needs to have a voice. Designers can easily be struck by their geometric strictness that distracts them from actual user ability.
