Some of the newer residential towers and the ones up and coming are really changing the residential tower game for us, I think. Think Calla, Mark, 6th & 10, MRV, WAM, Park Point, and the Park. Just as a few examples outside the EV.

And now for some skyline...

No idea what you're talking about. You're saying this isn't beautiful?

In Ottawa's case, the residential condo towers going up in the core are actually improving the skyline. ThIf anything, they are adding a bit of colour and flair to the sea of drab grey government office towers. Sad but true..The government definitely owns the most drab and depressing gray office buildings in the country. As well, the city may of relaxed the height restriction for a few of the proposed condos that aren't near DT...BTW great Winnipeg shots above as well.

If you are refering to the Parlaiment area, I diagree - we need to try very hard to keep a very unique identity around the parlaiment. Imagine this area, but just much much larger, with beautiful gothic buildings like below.

They should make Ottawa/Gatineau/Hull a Capital Region a la DC or Mexico City.

Quite possibly the greatest collection of buildings in the country.

What is the National Capitol Region considered, and what degree of control does it have?

I would say Vancouver has amazing residential and rather dull run of the mill offices. Then again I'm not huge on offices as everyone knows.
Still, this:

vs this:

I've heard the strong federalism of Gatineau means no one wants to remove them from Gatineau.

There are office buildings in Vancouver that look far better than the one you posted, that may in fact be the ugliest!
For example:

LOL. Thats like one of Vancouver's crappiest office buildings vs their best residential building.

And that may be one of Canada's best residential buildings... yet I'd still take Scotia Plaza, Tour CIBC, The Bow, that Bell tower posted above, and many others over it.

Out of curiosity, what positive effects would that have that can't be had now?

A nuisance with an uncanny knack for squeezing the life out of everything it touches that is not a park?
