A parallel syndrome exists here in Paris. People travel in droves from all over the world to see it, and Parisians themselves bitch, bitch, bitch, about the difficulty of living here, and the people who can afford to, go live elsewhere in France!

That's because here we are generally not talking about how great the mountains and waters are, and how much nature around us has to offer, but more about the nitty gritty details of urban living, architecture, and most important of all, SKYscrapers. Buildings that do not 'scrape the sky' are usually just given small mentions, and then summarily dismissed. Don't take it to heart about a little bit of negativity; the fact that forumers even make comments show that they do care about this city/region. To not want any improvement to what we currently have is, in fact, the real apathy.

Yes, that's because tourists want to see Eiffel Tower, and not the traffic jams or the ghettos of Paris

Central, to me, is one of the better ones here simply because of its height and uniqueness. It's massiveness gives a good presence to an otherwise quiet residential neighbourhood.

Mixed feelings. I'm not a big fan of the building overall, but the offices fronting Main are very nice. It's amazing how much better everything looks without balconies!

it looks very good in person, not blocky at all as some say. the space underneath has a nice calmness to it, away from the traffic. i'm sure it'll be a very soothing place when it rains

Source: me, last yr pic

West's new development phase being over 50% sold would seem to be not good news for NZ Auto Works who are currently operating on the site. The other businesses (West Coast Reproduction, etc) have moved out since this picture was taken.

It's a zoning issue more than economic isn't it? My area has tons of empty/dying retail under condos next to blocks of one-storey industrial, mostly mechanics.

But I got all my knowledge from Sim City so who knows.

Yea it's probably a zoning thing but something I think should change to encourage light industrial uses in these spaces

Now down to 29 units remaining. Also the sales centre closing will provide a spot for a new business to move into the village.. who will it be...

What do you guys think are the chances that the area south of 2nd Avenue being developed? I would expect to see taller towers on that side, to provide some people with those city + mountain views.

Might be a distant future, but the area is currently very poorly utilized.

I don't think it will go residential. As for offices/light industrial, there are currently a number of proposals for the area, and a number of demolitions already under way as the city made some slight zoning changes in the area to allow for more height and density. For example:

7 East 6th Ave

380 West 5th (near the Starbucks on Yukon and 2nd)

Current policy has this area preserved for those service commercial/light industrial activities that are necessary for the city to function. This has been tempered somewhat in recent years do the influx of pure office type uses. I think the best case would be build out of low-rise office buildings with service commercial / light industrial uses at grade. It is going to make for an interesting tension along 2nd. Very different from the homogeneity of Pacific Blvd on the north side of the inlet.
