That's considered art? eww....Maybe if all the columns had it...Sort of like an urban forest idea.

that would have been much more spectacular if the columns weren't there.

Either way, it seems that the landlord has demoed the building and will turn the site into a temporary park until either the land is sold or rezoning occurs.
The site is being turned into public garden plots until developed. I think this is preferable considering how pathetic some of those temporary 'parks' can be .

The former Speedy Tire at 2nd/Wylie was completely demolished and is becoming a community garden.

I wonder if any remediation is required before the site can become a condo development...?

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the reply!

I walked by Central today to take a look for myself... I agree that the public realm leaves a lot to be desired. I feel like it has a lot of potential though. It could work if they covered more of the columns in that bark, and blanketed the area with tons of vegetation. If they put some effort into creating a real rainforest-like setting, I think it could be a pretty special space.

To be fair, it's still not finished - for example there is still the water component to come.

Once the trees and other greenery mature, and once the area becomes more lively it will look better.

Also, the Central Valley Greenway is planned to run along the north side of the development. I assume this is going to be it here (alongside a one-way lane?):

All the pics are mine.

Thanks.

Last night I noticed that there's a bright red neon / LED patch (seemed wider than just a stripe) at the top of the Oppsal Tower.

^ I did a double-take, thinking briefly that this was the Concert development at 1st and Quebec and that I had somehow missed the better part of a year of excavation and below-grade construction. Thanks for taking the shot and posting it.

NE corner of W 2nd Ave and Wylie St is now all demolished and has been replaced by a community/property tax reduction garden. They forgot to remove the sign, though.

Speaking of the Concert Properties site, they have now poured a concrete foundation for... the display suite?

I don't think you've ever been to Volgograd.

It's amazing the rest of the world loves our city so much when half of the comments on the internet by people living in Vancouver are about how terrible a city we have and how dull it is downtown
