I can't find any photos of the CC-150, but it looks like France brought both an A330 and an A310?

Yeah, sorry, I didn't even realize they'd brought an A332 until it taxied out this evening (the vis isn't so good from here), along with the CC-150. The last French Airbus took off about a half hour ago.

Some people call Air Force One overkill. Yet here's the French prez rocking two widebodies. What a boss.

Eh, Air Force One is pretty overkill when you consider the whole air convoy. The Government Accounting Office published an audit that showed just how many aircraft were required (pre-9/11). Depending on the location (and thus the security situation), this convoy will include at a minimum one VC-25 or similar, and at least two C-17s or C-5s (for motorcade and to transport helicopters). Often a Gulfstream IV or similar aircraft will transport other senior staff, and aerial refueling will be part of the mission.

A single-day trip by Clinton to Switzerland in January of 2000 required 205 flying hours, which involved flying both VC-25s and a half-dozen cargo aircraft. The President can occasionally require widebody aircraft for events where he will only attend via video.

Vice has already touched on just how large the American delegations are (usually both 747's are dispatched, SAM 25000 and SAM 25001 I believe).

I had heard that the French A310 that arrived first was actually carrying staff and French media. So for a quick 4 day whirlwind tour of Canada two aircraft really doesn't seem like overkill to me.

Not to mention the multiple AH-64's (plus a Longbow or two, no doubt) and the UH-60's that hover in the vicinity of the destination airport 30 mins prior and after AF1 lands. That's what they did in YOW when I was still out east, IIRC. Nevermind that they also do that on their own soil.... Costly to shut down places like DEN and MIA (etc) for an hour to accomodate AF1.

I was mostly joking. Had the pleasure of seeing the A310 on Saturday.

Well since we're joking I think the French should upgrade that A330 to an A380.

Got a tour of the Control Tower last week. Good vantage point to see the IFP from!

That looks bigger than Vancouver's domestic check-in.

I would say so. YVR Domestic ~ 150m. YYC International ~ 200m.

Interesting press release by YYC about KLM's continued growth at YYC.

http://www.yyc.com/News/tabid/91/article...M-Announces-Continued-Growth-at-YYC.aspx

Not sure what they are talking about with "increased frequencies." I thought maybe they meant they were increasing to daily year-round but looks like daily summer and 6 weekly winter still? Maybe additional frequencies on the 772? Looks like a bit of fluff again.

YYC definitely put this out at the same time as the YEG announcement on purpose.

At first I was hoping it would have been KL announcing daily winter service, but we'd have probably already heard that here.

Same... As soon as I saw the tweet and headline that's exactly what I was thinking... Then I actually read it and thought ???

They're probably feeling a little left out. Last year FI announced YEG and YVR and this year AFKLM announced YEG and YVR. No love for YYC.

More to deflect criticism that international terminal is not needed because nothing is happening in YYC while YEG and YVR both got new flights. Essentially a defence presser for local media consumption.

Finally the AF flight to YVR could have interesting implications for BA in YYC. If BA has stiff competition on YVR, I could see them pulling the all ready weak YYC flight and sending pax on WS through either YVR or YYZ.
