Remote checkin has the following problems:
- No one wants to pay for remote checkin as premium service. No revenue upside to remote checkin.
- Cost side, remote checkin desk are usually higher price per square foot than airport locations. The only exceptions are location where either the airport or another transportation company (e.g. rail) is providing the space for a location specific reason (e.g. airport authority is trying to entice pax to use a far away airport).
- Bag handling and customer checkin are two different unions and the job responsibilities cannot be combined otherwise the unions will grieve that one union is taking away jobs from the other. Cost are either same or higher at remote facility with no mechanism to mitigate the high cost.
- Up until very recently, all checkin services with a bag had to be completed in the terminal building, Transport Canada regulation. So for example the checkin kiosk in the car rental facility at YVR would not a pax checkin if the pax was also trying to check a bag. The pax got a checkin rejection and had to cross the street to checkin at the terminal. This was negated by airlines installing separate bag drop facilities.
Mostly remote checkin is not possible because there is no additional revenue and the cost are considerably higher.
