I actually missed the pictures that y'all were talking about so passionately... (I check this thread maybe once every 3-4 days, and since my last visit, they were put up then taken down.)

But I can imagine what they looked like

The pictures are back on. The photographer took them down to add its trademark on them

Seeing that I posted yesterday what is arguably the best set of Montreal pics ever, I think its reasonable for me to have taken issue with your comment. But it's all good. We are, indeed, too sensitive on this forum, I'm sure you noticed that before.

That thread loads fine for me! I didn't notice you added more, great set, some of the best Montreal shots I've seen.

This website has some great aerials over Calgary, nothing like that Montreal set though.

Damn! Just as I was going to use one of them as my cover photo on facebook... (no big deal though, I used that epic TO skyline shot with the moon behind from earlier)

Canada Olympic Park is a sports venue, why mention that?

Obviously Calgary is not Chicago or Paris but for at least the downtown area, the city should try and make the river walk a more urban experience (like Chicago, Paris etc). There's too much of a buffer zone right now imo.

Calgary 2040...

I much prefer the natural greenery to a walled river.

The new Riverwalk they just built is fantastic.

Can't link images but there are some good ones on here.
Don't have time to look for pictures but the River Walk (Paseo del Rio) in San Antonio, Texas is a good example of balance.

Ottawa should really do something like this along the Rideau Canal.

Chicago and Paris have heavy urbanity on both sides of the river though; in Calgary, from the pictures, it doesn't seem to be the case.

It's basically impossible to make walking there an "urban experience" (your words...) when the other shore is clearly suburban.

How the city deals with the river interface is a bit of a touchy subject, because it means different things to a lot of people. Plenty of people love the natural edge to the river, and many like going on walks among all the trees (and there is a mature canopy over the Eau Claire portion of the pathway). It's a heavily used pathway.

That said, there have been developments over the years to upgrade the river interface. In 2012, the East Village portion of the riverwalk was completed, and has earned accolades from all over the country.

http://www.calgarymlc.ca/news/awards

On Tuesday, the City held an open house with proposals for West Eau Claire Park, which encompasses much of the central portion of the riverwalk. It will include separated bike lanes and a boardwalk.

To be precise, I said "a more urban experience". The bottom 2 photos of that last set is what I'm talking about.

It's not suburban at all, Sunnyside / Hillhurst is a pretty dense neighbourhood, and it's rapidly infilling with 5 - 10 storey condo buildings.
