I assumed it will run on the semi-abandoned track that goes from Emory to Armour yards, just south of Lindbergh Marta.

Is there even anywhere above ground that you *could* put a heavy rail line? Or would it have to be all underground.

there is most definitely already freight rail line that runs between the Armour yards and the CDC. it is perfect for a MARTA heavy expansion.. even runs right next to the MARTA train maintenance building at Armour.. then goes southeast, cuts between the CDC and Emory University ( CDC north, Emory South ). at that point the rail line merges with a north/south line. i believe the plan is they would go north, and there would end up being some new construction, possibly elevated, possible underground, to connect the new line through the North Dekalb Mall area to another existing freight line near N Decatur/Church st., which takes the line back southwest to the Avondale Station

Not necessarily true. Have you ever been to Long Beach to see how their light rail is actually within a dedicated ROW in the center of the streets - not like the downtown Atlanta Streetcar. So thus traffic doesn't have as much of an impact on headways since it's coordinated with the intersection lights as well. The only way traffic would impede would be if it's blocking intersections in which case you can be ticketed - and which can/should be enforced more here in Atlanta.

the thing gets entirely painted over every week with new graffiti, there will be plenty new to replace the old. i wish there were more areas in the city that were more "laissez-faire" about graffiti.

it's in the MARTA documents, somewhere out there. their LPA included "shared right of way" with cars on clifton road.

i would like to see a heavy rail line like this eventually happen, with the clifton corridor being the first leg of it:

The most recent documentation mentions it being in the medians when it is in the "shared right of way" conditions - which isn't the same as the downtown Streetcar where it could become traffic dependent.

::Clifton Corridor LPA (also referred to as LRT 1) would provide 8.79 miles of new light rail service from
Lindbergh Center MARTA Station to Avondale MARTA Station that generally include operations adjacent to
the CSX right-of-way. The LPA also includes in-street operations on the medians of Clifton Road (through the
CDC/Emory area), Scott Boulevard, North Decatur Road, DeKalb Industrial Way and North Arcadia Avenue.::

That's a great concept, but would be more quickly and cheaply done as light rail, using the same type equipment as is being used on the downtown loop.

Carter is working with GA State to bring to fruition their plans for an athletic center plus apartments, retail, etc. They also want to add a streetcar line running down capitol ave.

Original plan

I think you're route has a lot of merit. It would undoubtedly by used by a lot of people, including myself, but I don't think heavy rail is the way to go. For one, it'd be insanely expensive and the other issue is there simply isn't the land available, unless this was underground most of the time, which again, would be insanely expensive. Light rail would make a lot more sense and if they did it correctly, like having a dedicated lane where the light rail had to run on a road, it'd be fine.

I agree underground routes generally tend to cost around 250 million per kilometer this rout would cost 7.5 billion. I don't see that happening in GA ever.

I'd like to see Emory toss in $300 million to get the ball rolling. If they could get matching funds from the feds and MARTA that would make a substantial dent in the cost.

Funny 'it' happens in the 1970s and 80s in GA with regularity-- that's how MARTA got built-- BTW without ANY state funds--

The process has become much more expensive with time a penny tax could pay for it but we would need the metro counties to vote yes to that which in the current political climate isn't going to happen. The northern counties and the outer metro are simply awash in tea. If we doubled the penny tax in Fulton Dekalb and hopefully soon Clayton we would have the money to build it out if you include the potential for property sales post construction.
