Road my bike in this morning and noticed how Fox is starting to dominate that area of the downtown. and yes 107 st building is an active site again. Another site that is quite imposing is the new NAIT building.

Oh and the number of people texting while driving is outrageous.

This has to be addressed with 3 or 5 demerit points if caught. A simple fine no worky.

Last week I ordered a Blackvue 650 front an rear dash cam. Cam will be hardwired in. This will record the possible shenanigans that might come across my travels. So many close calls with morons texting or talking and driving.

Agree. Demerits are necessary to really curb the problem.

Whose space is it anyway?

As downtown development ramps up around the arena, questions of the core's new identity emerge

Samantha Power

Last weekend, across the street from the new arena site, a hotel that has stood through 100 years of Edmonton’s downtown history opened its doors to a new crowd, bringing home the reality that change in the neighbourhood is not two years away, but happening today.

Denizen Hall opened its doors briefly for the Up + Downtown Festival. Crowds packed in on Saturday night to witness the lead singer of Pup hanging from the rafters, and a dance-pit swirl of people for Naomi Punk on Sunday. It was a packed soft opening for one of downtown’s newest venues, which won’t be open again until later in the month. But just two weeks, before a different party had been underway in the space, formerly the Richelieu Pub.

Molson Brewery site design faced opposition from Edmonton city planners
http://www.edmontonjournal.com/news/edmo...aced+opposition+from/10296592/story.html

Quote:
EDMONTON - A development plan for the Molson Brewery site faced opposition from some city departments for months before it was shown at a public hearing, with the initial proposal called “disappointing” and “same-old-same-old.”

The 3.2-hectare site at 104th Avenue and 121st Street was considered one of the most significant transit-oriented development opportunities in the city, a large chunk of land along a densely populated corridor slated for a future LRT line.

But some planners voiced concerns about plans for an inward-facing retail complex, according to documents obtained by the Oliver Community League through a Freedom of Information Request. A public hearing to rezone the land was held in August 2013 and rezoning was approved.

“This is a major test of the (transit oriented development) guidelines. We need to oppose this design,” one planner wrote in a March 2013 email. In a formal memo, about two months before the public hearing, the Planning Initiatives section wrote: “We have serious concerns and cannot support the application … One of the primary principles of the TOD Guidelines is connectivity and unfortunately, the proposal runs contrary to this principle.”

City planners support proposed rezoning for Greyhound station

By Gordon Kent, Edmonton Journal October 16, 2014

City planners are backing a controversial plan to rezone land north of Yellowhead Trail where Greyhound wants to move its bus terminal.

The lease on the downtown bus station expires in May 2016 and the company is considering shifting passenger service to its maintenance yard at 12521 123rd St.

In a report released Thursday, city staff support the proposed rezoning of the 1.7-hectare site, saying it meets the objectives of plans for the area.

The development would also be compatible with existing and proposed uses for nearby land and meets city technical requirements, the report indicates...

Australia's Sonic Healthcare nets $3B contract for Edmonton labs
An expected 2000 Edmonton jobs affected in deal

A huge Austrailian health care corporation has been awarded a $3-billion contract to provide laboratory services in Edmonton.

Sonic Healthcare Limited was selected by Alberta Health Services to provide lab services intended to replace hospital labs operated by AHS and Covenant Health, as well as the services now provided by the private company Dynalife.

The change in companies is expected to affect about 2,000 lab workers, represented by several unions, all of would likely have to negotiate new contracts.

“There was an expectation that because Dynalife has been doing this work in the Edmonton area for 10 years now, that they would likely be the successful proponent," said Elisabeth Ballermann, president of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta, which represents 1,200 of those workers.

Have gone by a few times and quite like it. It also ties in well with the last major addition.

The gardens in the rendering looks very Vancouver though.

Lamphier: Edmonton is hot, and now is the time to attract new businesses here

http://www.edmontonjournal.com/business/...ract+businesses+here/10302177/story.html

Quote:
So here’s my chief concern: What happens when thousands of city workers, Stantec employees and others relocate to those new office towers in the arena district (not to mention developer John Day’s new office tower on Rice Howard Way) over the next few years?

As some of the city’s commercial real estate brokers and landlords have warned, the impending migration will leave some big holes in a string of existing office towers around the core.
Quote:
After interviewing hundreds of company execs in the ’burbs over the years, most say they’re content where they are: closer to customers, suppliers, the airport and with lots of free parking for staff.
Quote:
Only by expanding the overall pie and attracting new companies from outside the region will the city as a whole benefit. Question is, how to achieve this?

Fortunately, I’m not the only one who is thinking about this. So is Edmonton Economic Development Corp. (EEDC) boss Brad Ferguson and former Upside Software boss Ashif Mawji, among others.

Ferguson was in Montreal this past week, pitching Quebec companies on the benefits of relocating to Edmonton — where taxes are low, office rents are competitive, and the population of skilled, youthful workers is expanding fast.

Happily, Ferguson says he’s finding a receptive audience there, especially among big engineering companies that see Edmonton as a great place to operate.
Quote:
Mawji, who founded and headed Upside Software before it was sold to a U.S. tech firm a few years ago, also wants to see Edmonton take a more aggressive approach toward companies that may consider locating here.

In particular, he favours the use of tax breaks, tax-free zones or outright tax holidays — as are currently used by certain other jurisdictions, including New York state — to attract new business. Like Ferguson, Mawji says the time to strike is now, while Edmonton has the wind at its back.
Yes, yes, yes and yes. I've been saying all along, we need more businesses moving to our office towers from across Canada, not across the street.

In what could be argued is a hot to overheating economy, we want to offer tax breaks now?

That new interchange they're building on the Henday at Manning is gonna be pretty big. Just drove there, I believe there's four overpasses built. The Henday/Yellowhead one is gonna be even crazier though.
