Swing gates are at capacity, part of it simply to comfortably support the existing flights on our summer sked. I still don't feel like the new terminal has any bearing on service to South America or Dubai for YYC.

This would be a great starting point:

This is more of a wish list and it's unlikely most of these will happen.

Does anyone know why Air Transat have pulled some of their LGW flights for February and March 2015? We will hopefully be having some friends visit us at that time but some flights seem to have disappeared off the booking system. BA and AC from LHR are about £150-200 more expensive for UK originating passengers.

Would absolutely love a HKG flight but PEK is a good airport to connect through so it's all good

Seems they are shifting more service to the east, Toronto and Montreal schedules are being boosted for spring 15. They have also announced they will no longer operate service to Germany from western Canada.

In addition they just announced St.Johns-London Gatwick twice weekly using one of it's newly delivered 737-800's and service from Toronto and Montreal to Budapest.

Eep! This is how my elderly German in-laws travel back and forth between YYC and Germany

Any likelihood of someone stepping into the breach and offering non-stop flights between YYC and Frankfurt that are cheaper than the mainline offerings?

Yup, I'd assume Condor might increase it's presence on it's seasonal FRA-YYC route.

Uk sept stats

Another solid month for YYC and YVR.

Overall highlights for the West:

YYC
LHR up about 1,500 pax and a solid LF of 93.7%. Approx 78% of the added capacity has been absorbed.
LGW down about 840 pax but due to fewer flights because of days of week of flights. LF about 88%.
MAN and GLA a mixed bag but good LF of 89.2%

YVR
LHR up about 6,500 pax and a very solid 94.8% LF. Approx 93% of the added capacity absorbed. A very good sign.
LGW up about 450 pax. LF almost 98%. Perhaps one reason why Air Transat increasing to 6 weekly next summer.
http://news-releases.transat.com/2014-10-15-Air-Transat-unveils-its-new-Europe-program-for-2015
MAN and GLA minimal change but very decent 89.8% and 92.7% LFs.

With Virgin Atlantic pulling out next summer these numbers will obviously take a hit next year.

YEG
LHR down about 1,000 pax and a LF of about 88.8%. Not bad.
LGW no passengers in September compared to last year.
Comparatively, YEG is absorbing less than half the total int'l capacity (includes Icelandair and Sunwing of course) added in September based on their Sept traffic results.

Appears they are pulling flights during the slowest months of the year.

A brief history.... not that long ago (2009) there were 6 weekly A330s from LGW and MAN throughout the winter for ski charters. Over the years these were Thomas Cook, MY Travel, Excel, Monarch, Air Transat. And then there were none.

CX looking at possible YYC flight in 2016

http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/Ca...algary+possible+2016/10296361/story.html

Now wouldn't this be something else!

3 or 4 weekly A350 flight would be my guess if it happens. However if we get a mainland China flight before 2016, then I would guess CX would shy away from starting YYC-HKG.

My guess would be that AC will step up before "allowing" this to happen if they can allocate a 787 before that time.

Apparently all airline folk stay at the palliser! Lol

Article to the link above - now that's what I'm talking about! I'm expecting more of this as the new terminal nears completion.

Cathay Pacific exec says airline eyeing Calgary as possible 2016 destination

CALGARY, AB; OCTOBER 16, 2014 -- Tom Owen, senior vice president, Americas for Cathay Pacific Airways poses for a photo at the Fairmont Palliser in...more
A+
BY AMANDA STEPHENSON, CALGARY HERALD OCTOBER 16, 2014
The prospect of a second non-stop flight between Calgary and Asia was dangled before local business groups Thursday by a senior executive with Cathay Pacific.

But it won’t happen until at least 2016.

Tom Owen, Cathay Pacific’s senior vice-president for the Americas, told a crowd of business leaders at a luncheon event that Calgary is too small a market to serve with the Hong Kong-based airline’s existing fleet of Boeing 777-300s. But he said when Cathay Pacific takes delivery of its new, smaller Airbus 350s in 2016, “long, lean” routes like Calgary to Hong Kong could become economical for the first time.

“It will open up a world of opportunity for Cathay Pacific. So watch this space, but nothing until after 2016,” Owen said.

Owen is in Calgary this week to celebrate the launch of dedicated, twice-weekly Cathay Pacific air cargo freighter service from Calgary to Hong Kong. It is the airline’s first Alberta service, and marks the first time in six years that Calgary will have a direct air freighter link with Asia. (Calgary had a direct Asian link to Seoul, South Korea until 2008, but that service was cancelled by operator Asiana during the global recession.)

Cathay Pacific’s only Canadian passenger services are non-stop flights between Hong Kong and Vancouver, Hong Kong and Toronto, and Vancouver and New York-JFK.

Speaking to the Herald following his speech, Owen confirmed that Calgary is indeed on his airline’s radar screen.

“We have a list of destinations that we look at on a regular basis, assessing market size, market opportunity and growth potential. Calgary is on that list,” he said.

He emphasized there are other North American destinations Cathay Pacific is looking at as well, but reiterated that the arrival of a smaller aircraft type in 2016 would make a Calgary-Hong Kong route much more attractive.

“I think this market may become more viable for us to look at,” Owen said.

Owen’s comments were met with spontaneous applause by the crowd, which included members of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, the Calgary Airport Authority, and Calgary Economic Development. Business groups and tourism operators have long been clamouring for a second direct air link between Calgary and the lucrative Asian market. Right now, Air Canada’s service to Tokyo, Japan remains the only available non-stop option, though Air Canada has publicly mused about a possible Calgary-Beijing connection.

Calgary Economic Development CEO Bruce Graham — who has been working closely with the Calgary Airport Authority in an effort to secure another Asian link for air passengers — said the Cathay Pacific executive’s comments caught him off guard, but were very welcome.

“It was news to me as well,” he said. “The fact that Tom mentioned specific dates, and aligned it with an aircraft that’s on order, is really encouraging. I think it’s incumbent on us to demonstrate what we can do with this cargo service, and build off of that to build a passenger service — which, quite frankly, could be a real winner.”

There is already a significant amount of business travel back and forth between Calgary and China, in large part because of Calgary’s oil and gas economy and Chinese investment in it. China is Alberta’s second largest trading partner, and Alberta’s trading relationship with China has more than tripled since 2003.

According to the Government of Alberta, from 2009 to 2013, Alberta’s annual exports to China averaged $3.13 billion. Hong Kong is also Canada’s third largest export market for beef, Alberta’s signature agricultural product.

“Quite frankly, the Asia-Pacific markets are going to be key to our energy future, our agricultural future, and increasingly, the engagement of our human capital. The best and the brightest people from here are going to be working there and vice versa,” Graham said.

Cathay Pacific’s cargo air service, using the Boeing 747-8 commercial freighter, will launch Saturday with its inaugural flight to Calgary International Airport. It will operate twice-weekly, and will fly everything from large machinery to time-sensitive perishable goods.

Calgary will be the 14th freighter destination in Cathay Pacific’s cargo network, and the third Canadian freighter destination after Toronto and Vancouver.

Owen said Cathay Pacific has been in talks with the Calgary Airport Authority for at least three years about this service, and believes the market is strong enough to make the service a success.

“Now is the time, because we believe the market in Alberta has been growing fast enough, and it’s got enough potential with Asia and China,” he said. “From our perspective, the Americas is where the future is for our freighter business.”

Word. If they so desired, HKG-YYC would be child's play for an AC 788; UA's success with CTU-SFO on the 788, which is similar stage length, is relevant.

^ good article but let's not get too carried away.

Read it carefully and it's perfectly crafted with words like could, future, look at, on the radar etc...

This is a typical speech given to local chambers of commerce or the like.

How long is their list, who else is on the list etc etc...

No kidding we'll have a much better chance with all the new 787/350 type aircraft coming online though.

Yeah I agree it's meaningless, the dude came all the way from China didn't he? Might as well say something that YYC wants to hear.

The only thing that's fact is:

*Cathay has 359 on order
*The 77W is a larger airplane than the 359
*From HKG, comparatively speaking, YYC is a long and thin market

These three statements are applicable to quite a number of airlines at the moment, perhaps subbing 359 for 789.

^ it does give something for AC to think about though. How much do they want to "protect" the YYC-asia market.

This is also not the first time CX has dangled scheduled passenger service to YYC. I can't find the article but I believe they mentioned this before back in 2009-10ish.
