Closing Gateway Park visitor centre a mistake, employee says

EDMONTON - Plans by Edmonton’s economic agency to close the Gateway Park visitor centre are a mistake, an employee says.

“It’s not something you think has value until you need it,” Gary Duguay said Monday.

“I can’t see how you deliver the type of service we provide without face-to-face service with people.”

The Edmonton Economic Development Corp. doesn’t intend to renew its lease Dec. 31 at the city-owned building on the Queen Elizabeth 2 Highway near Edmonton’s southern boundary.

The organization has run the centre since 2003 and spends about $360,000 a year operating it.

The 9.5-hectare property features the landmark Leduc No. 1 drilling rig that ushered in Alberta’s modern oil industry when it struck a gusher in 1947...

what to do with the derrick is one discussion - fort edmonton perhaps?

whether or not to have a visitor centre at this location is a different discussion.

but if having a visitor centre at our city boundary is so important, why is there no hue and cry to also have one on highway 2 southbound, or 16 westbound or 16 and 16a eastbound or 628 and 630 westbound or 28 southbound and 28a/15 southwestbound?

my guess is that we get more discrete and more first time visitors on some of those other routes than we get on highway 2 northbound.

I see in this picture as it was 1:59 to the half and Esks were up 30 - 0 at that point, rapid_business, Coldrsx and guest were not in their seats, but getting some beer instead and waiting for one SHOFEAR and company to show up.

Next stop, valley floor: City considers elevators down to river

EDMONTON - Mayor Don Iveson is excited by the possibility Edmonton could have two incline elevators into the North Saskatchewan River valley by 2017.

Lifts are being considered near the Hotel Macdonald stairs on the north bank and 105th Street on the south as part of improved valley access.

The north lift and a Touch the Water promenade over the river near the Walterdale Bridge are already proposed to be built with $34.4 million for connectivity projects.

While officials need to do more study to see whether there’s enough money for a south lift as well, Iveson said it’s a great idea.

“It’s a pretty big adjustment from the heavy-duty cable cars we were looking at previously and the funiculars we were looking at,” he said Tuesday...

Fox Tower set to receive brownfield cleanup grant

The northwest corner of 102nd Avenue and 104th Street will be turned into a 142-unit, 28-storey highrise condo called the Fox in the first phase of development. Fox Two, a 169-unit, 33-storey condo tower, will be built in the second phase.

EDMONTON - The company erecting the Fox Tower One condominiums is set to receive the first funding under a revised city program to clean up contaminated property.

Council’s executive committee approved an agreement Tuesday to pay Langham Developments Ltd. about $2 million to remove fuel that leaked under the 104th Street site.

The former Greyhound bus garage location was left as a parking lot for more than 20 years partly due to this contamination, according to a city report.

But the land on the northwest side of 102nd Avenue has been remediated and Langham is turning it into a 28-storey condo and retail building, the report says...

The Edmonton Federation of Community League's survey is back.

A total of 627 Edmontonians responded to EFCL’s surveys, including:

415 community league members, of whom 162 are members of community league boards
212 people who are not currently a member of a community league; of those 97 indicated they had been a league member in the past.

Most important issues facing Edmonton

“Urban sprawl” was the most frequent response from all groups to the question about what are the most important issues facing Edmonton over the next five years.

Other frequently mentioned issues included:

Infill housing
Safety and crime prevention
Traffic
Road and sidewalk maintenance
Neighbourhood renewal

Importance of various community league programs and activities

Advocacy on neighbourhood issues was considered important by all three respondent groups (84% members, 83% board members, 76% non-members).
Other programs and activities with high results on importance included:
Playgrounds, rinks and other park development: about 87% for all respondent groups
Information sharing (89% members, 91% board members, 71% non-members)
Sport and recreation was considered important by about 75% across all three groups.

Benefits of Community Leagues

According to league member responses, the opportunity to meet or connect with neighbours was the most frequently cited benefit of community league membership, followed by access to programs and events and a sense of belonging and community connectedness.

Challenges of Community Leagues

League members identified the following as the most significant challenges their league faces:

City processes (69%)
Understanding how best to represent the community (66%)
Obtaining funding (66%)
Ability to advocate on behalf of the community (65%)

Role of the Community League in representing the community as a whole

74% of community league members agreed leagues currently represent the community as a whole (not just their members), compared to 38% of non-members.
There was strong agreement across all respondent groups when asked if leagues have a role in representing the views of the entire neighbourhood: 86% league members, 82% league board members, 72% non-members.

Diversity in community league membership

About 40% of league members agreed that membership in their league represents the diversity of their community, compared to 20% of non-members. 34% of league members were neutral on this question as were 30% of non-members.

Both members and non-members most frequently suggested leagues could offer a greater variety of programs and benefits and could undertake initiatives to attract people from different cultural and ethnic groups to increase the diversity in community league membership.

The historic Glenora Bed and Breakfast Inn currently occupies the site, together with other small retail services at street level. Examples exist throughout the city … vacant lots filled with garbage, crumbly holes surrounded by construction fencing, empty windows covered with ratty newspaper.

Why does Edmonton have so many vacant commercial properties, and what can be done about it?

The city has an initial two-part plan going to community services committee Wednesday. Administration says there are between 800 and 1,000 empty or partially empty commercial lots and about 25 to 50 of these are causing recurring nuisance and/or safety concerns.

The city’s community standards team suggests making a list of the worst offenders and cracking down on enforcement. They’re also hoping the provincial government will give Edmonton the right to change the tax structure, so a vacant lot could be penalized (rather than rewarded, as it is now).

Wouldn't a funicular or elevator in the river valley be a waste money given that the new LRT will have a station at the Muttart Conservatory?
