Am I the only one that hates high end stores?? I'm glad vancouver doesn't have that crap ie Harrods printemps. It's pathetic! Sorry but when they are selling stupid plain tshirts for over 100 bucks they can go suck it

Macy's is not high end, its about the same as the bay and even the bay has moved upmarket. Bloomingdales on the other hand is more high end.

Holt is definitely high end but overall the selection is average at best and that is another discussion entirely.

B.C. grocers who want to have store-within-a store liquor sales must be a minimum of 100,000 square feet and maintain 75 per cent of their sales in food products, the provincial justice ministry said this morning in a news release.

Jesus christ our liquor laws are archaic. What food store besides Walmart, Costco and Superstore are more than 100,000 sf? This is kinda thanks-for-nothing legislation.

Sure, Macy's not high end. The rest mentioned like Printemps, etc. are. Holts is high end but it could do more to stay competitive, like I mentioned before.

Why are people here so defensive when I point out what we could have? Lol!

Others just seem to hate the idea of having high end stores, perhaps it is better that we have a city filled with Winners or Target? I like lower end stores too but variety is always good.

This whole thing is a waste of money.

After the opening up of private liquor store licenses ~10 years ago, there's really no problem finding booze.

It's all just pandering, what has been the whole mess that is BC's "modernization"

John Yap did not listen to anyone in the public. He listened to the big restaurant chains on the pricing (donelly, cactus, earls) also while increasing tax revenues by putting high minimums on restaurant/bar pricing, the private liquor stores and the BCGEU about the regulations surround putting booze in grocery stores and thats about it.

Did they put in the distance requirements still where the only store in Vancouver was Choices on cambie (or one of the other choices) and of course they were eliminated because of the 100k sq-ft requirement.

I can't stand the NDP and the BC Liberals are doing a fantastic job at going into the gutter as well.

It just amazes me every time I see alcohol being sold in a supermarket. All the doomsday screamers about lack of selection are totally unfounded. You walk into a QFC or a Whole Foods in Washington and you find a selection that literally blows any of the specialty stores we have here out of the water.

It appears Vancouver Sun fixed their typo as I had just copy and pasted it from their website. They now specify 10,000 square feet as well.

Ugh, what an awful, anti-urban rule. Imagine if restaurants had to be a minimum size to get a liquor license - this is just as dumb.

(of course, it's kind of a moot point since there are so many other restrictions on private liquor stores - IIRC only two grocery stores in Vancouver are far enough away from existing liquor stores to qualify)
