Judging from the shape and size it looks like the one on the right could be Whiteface. There are a few other mountains in the Adirondacks that are closer to Ottawa but there are 500 m or more shorter than Whiteface.

This is pretty cool. I never thought you could see the Montérégiennes or the Adirondacks from Gatineau Park!

If I have the angles right I believe Montreal is well to the left of the picture.

I don't think it is.

It would be if that was a picture of Saint-Jerome looking east. Not Ottawa looking south. And the shape is not right.

Mont Royal would be too short to register at such a distance, at least with a limited telephoto.

I think.

It's actually of Ottawa looking east-southeast.

It's interesting nonetheless. Those mountains in the distance HAVE to be in either Quebec or New York State. It's clearly looking somewhere in the range of south/southeast/east (I'd have to look at it very closely to figure out exactly what viewcone we're talking about), and in that direction Ontario is completely flat, to a degree that rivals the Prairies. The only hills within Ontario are west of Ottawa which is an angle that is very clearly not being looked at.

Due south is about in the centre of the right half of the photo, where those two stubby white buildings are.

I'm not sure about that. I think it's NY state.

When I used to live in NDG and took the bus downtown, I could see mountains from the Turcotte interchange to the southwest, and only on a clear day. i think that bump you guys see is the Adironacks.

Just did some matching up of the image to the skyline.

That photo was taken on King Mountain, correct? If so, that can't be Montreal in the distance. The horizon of that image is entirely in the United States.

Here's roughly what's visible in that photo:

I took the picture from the King Mountain trail (here), so that bump should be around Massena, NY or nearby.

Another thing: That pair of mountains at the left of the image are behind the University of Ottawa which means they're somewhere along a straight line going roughly from Ottawa to Burlington, Vermont. Green Mountains possibly?

Could be, but I didn't think my camera would be that powerful (135mm lens?)

It might be just some hills between the border and Plattsburgh.

There are actual mountains in that shade range in NYS, with heights comparable to Mont Royal and even Mont Tremblant or higher. Whiteface is the talled but there is also Debar, Titusville and Lyon, among others...

^Interesting.. I didn't know about that!

You can see a cellular/radio tower above the Casino Lac Leamy in the picture (to the left). I think this is somewhere south of Hawkesbury, Ontario.

Here's a bigger picture of that Ottawa panorama for those that haven't found it yet

I was always impressed to see those mountains from Montreal, especially early in the morning. You don't see them very often if you are not looking for them.

It can't be.

Line of sight from the pic means Mont Royal would have to be way to the left. The bump you see is right above Château Laurier.

Maybe it's Lyon Mountain in NY? - https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Lyon+Mo...!1s0x4ccbc81d6143d2cf:0x348fc2124d22f4d3

I'm the guy who took the pic, so I know the starting point.

Sorry to go OT, but WTF????? Just because there's an island there does not mean it's not on the coast??

And yeah, i remember that discussion and there wasn't a claim about Mtrl being landlocked, just that it was on a river and not a coast (whereas Vancouver is both on a river and a coast!)

I remember bacause we also discussed the falacy of Mtrl being the "largest inland port", which is ain't.

Anyway, back to our regularly scheduled channel ...

I'm going to go with Rigaud guess for the leftmost bump. No way it could be anything south east of that. (terrain on google)

Mt Rigaud would have to be to the left of the Casino, from this vantage point. Or are we talking about the same bump?

I guess my Hawkesbury radio tower comment can be ignored now!
