This one is a bit old (from February 2014) so it's missing some towers (most notably, Guardian is but a stub), but it shows a unique view that we normally don't see. From what appears to be the upper storeys of the London condos at Heritage Station, looking north towards downtown. Heritage Drive is in the foreground, and Macleod Trail runs diagonally up the middle of the image.

The Chinook Area in the midground is the best candidate for a secondary skyline in Calgary.

That must be the best vantage point to take photos of Calgary's skyline.

Yeah, that guy is extremely talented. He's the same photographer whose photos I posted on the last two pages of the "Post some pictures of your city" thread

/\ Breathtaking pano of QC with the bridges !

This is a really nice aerial of the Museum/Crescent neighbourhood, one of Montreal's most mature and refined urban landscapes outside of Old Mtl.

So is Chinook planned to be a secondary urban node for Calgary? I've always found it interesting just how much Calgary is concentrated on its core as opposed to other cities (like Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa) which are more multinodal largely due to age, I suppose.

In terms of architectural diversity, Montreal's skyline is still #1.

It's a consequence of the culture of the energy industry in Calgary. It likes to cluster (along with all the law firms, banks etc that service it). Calgary has long planned suburban nodes, but hadn't caught on enough to create any sort of critical mass anywhere. Now, we're starting to see nodes outside the core emerge - in and around the U of C, the far SE near a major new hospital, Quarry Park, etc. Places like Chinook are planned "Major Activity Centres".

Love that pic of Edmonton! A lot of people don't realize just how long our skyline is down Jasper Ave.

Quebec??

Its really nice to see, the natural defensive layout to the city, like this shot, and it got me to wondering????

Are there any other city cores in N.A. , that we can think of built for defensive position rather than economic ones??

Like most are built in relationship to the port, not high on a hill???

It seems so old world?? It looks more like a castle on the Rhine or Danube!

I understand the history of the area, but there should be other places where that was considered, but I am not coming up with anything...
At least not a major city!!??

Thoughts??

I am pretty sure San Juan, Puerto Rico and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic were also built for the defensible positions. I would wager that this also had a major hand in St. John's being where it is, even though it is centred on the harbour, it is an extremely defensible location, being inside a very narrow passage. A fleet trying to invade St. John's could easily have been destroyed by cannons positioned at the narrows.
