Thanks, it sounds like they have pretty well thought of everything, so that's good news.

Structure to soon rise at New Mosaic Stadium site

Construction is on schedule as four cranes move onto the Evraz Place grounds

Reported by Kevin Martel

First Posted: Sep 18, 2014 12:59pm

Regina’s new Mosaic Stadium is starting to take shape and it won’t be long before the public will be able to see a structure.

Right now it’s hard to see much of anything besides construction crews and materials. One thing that might catch your eye are a pair of gold tower cranes in the northeast and southeast corners of the site, standing 215 feet and 200 feet respectively. Two more cranes will be added next month; all four will remain at the site until October 2015.

PCL Construction District Manager Sean Hamelin said on any given day there are over 100 people working on the $278 million project on the grounds of Evraz Place, with four excavators and 30 trucks hauling soil off the site. About 64 Olympic sized swimming pools worth of material have been hauled away so far' that’s about half of the total excavation work.

Hamelin said everything is on budget and on time despite recent rainfall.

“It’s been boring which is great for us. There have been no surprises,” he said.

If everything continues to go on schedule, Hamelin outlined how you’ll be able to see part of the building very soon.

“You’ll start to be able to see some significant, what we call super structure, within the next few months.”
Hamelin said a significant amount of the structure should be erected over the winter. He’s hoping for the weather to be mild but even if we don’t luck out, he explained how they can still put up insulated tarps and use propane and natural gas heaters to protect concrete.

“There’s no question the excitement in our city is real when you see the cranes in the air, you see the bowl being dug, the cement going in and the structure going up,” said Mayor Michael Fougere.

The stadium is expected to be finished by August 2016 with the first Saskatchewan Roughrider game in June 2017.

One interesting thing that comes out of the video as that the west side will be excavated 2 levels below the field to accommodate "mezzanine, food services and storage"

I really like the sunken bowl. That will help reduce ascent/descent times for fans. Glad to hear provision has been made for snow clearing too.

Also glad to hear stadium construction progress is on time so far. Now I know we've been bitten before by spokespersons saying the stadium is on time when it actually isn't (Winnipeg/Hamilton), but at this point there is no reason to misbelieve them. Substantial completion is marked for August 2016, but frankly speaking, as long as the stadium is fully complete and ready for use by June 2017, I will consider it to be on time.

^ 2 years seems pretty ambitious to build and fully outfit the place. But the start of the 2017 season seems like a pretty realistic target, with more than enough time to move in, get set up and avoid any THF-style fiascos (not that it would be an issue given that the Riders have a place to play until the new venue is open).

2.5 years should be more than enough time. If Minny can tear down a 63,000 seat stadium and build a 66,000, 1.8 million square foot stadium in 2.5 years, I'm sure Regina can do the same with a stadium less than 1/2 the size requiring no tear down of a pre-existing stadium.

What is the outer wall of the stadium supposed to be composed of that it is transparent in the renderings?

August 2016 for substantial completion seems completely doable to me. When is the first game slated for the new stadium? 2017 or end of 2016?

June 2017. Possible test events leading up to that.

I hope they do the 75% capacity event as an exclusive for Season ticket holders. That would be a cool way to usher in the new stadium

3 years is plenty of time. Winnipeg's timeline was unrealistic form the start some like 18-24 months from sod turning to first game. They would've met the timeline had it been for 3 years, like your smart team! Design looks fantastic, by the way!

How about a 50% capacity event being Grey Cup 2016 from Hamilton on the Maxtrons - with the Riders playing!

That's actually a great idea. Capacity for 20,000 - 25,000 would be perfect.

That would be putting too many eggs in the "project will be completed on schedule" basket if it was the 2016 Vanier - unless Taylor field was the back up plan.

Has there been any recent comment about whether the LED lighting is actually going to be in place? These night photos were not part of the official roll out.

There are plans for exterior LED lighting but they just don't want to commit too early to a certain type as technologies are always improving.
