Evraz of Russia is spinning off its N. America operations in an IPO. This should be good news for Regina. The Regina plant should be booming in the current market, but instead is just doing OK. The Russians do not have the capital to invest in the Regina works and have instead been sucking every dollar out of here to pay their massive European debts.

Evraz place will have to be renamed as this new company will certainly have a new name.

It is too bad the head office is Chicago. There are really no executives here at all, although there is a still large office.

Strong economies have helped Regina and Saskatoon become more appealing to immigrants, according to a new report.

The Conference Board of Canada’s City Magnets III: Benchmarking the Attractiveness of 50 Canadian Cities saw Regina place eighth and Saskatoon place 12th.

Alan Arcand, associate director of the Centre for Municipal Studies, said both cities have seen sizable increases in newcomers as the local economies have improved.

Regina led all 50 cities in economic growth, while Saskatoon trailed narrowly behind in third. Despite their sizable increases in newcomers, both cities still scored relatively poorly in foreign-born population and evidence of multiculturalism.

Quick Facts:

* On any given day four excavators are on site. They’ve removed 160,000 cubic metres of material so far, or 55 per cent of what’s going to be removed in total. About 75 per cent of the excavation will be complete by the end of 2014.

* Four rigs on site have completed 70 per cent of the piling work. That task is expected to be complete in October.

* Eighty per cent of the main floor foundation work on the east side of the stadium site is finished, said Hamelin. Soon, crews will install columns and suspended slabs. It won’t be long before people walking on * * Elphinstone Street will be able to see a structure rising above the construction fence.

* The construction site hole, for the stadium’s sunken bowl, is currently six metres deep. The west side will eventually be 10 metres deep to accommodate two additional levels: A floor for events and a mezzanine with locker rooms, kitchens and storage.

* Between 90 and 100 tradespeople are working on the site daily. That will jump to 180 by November. About 80 per cent of workers are local.

* The two cranes towering over the site are 65.5 metres and 61 metres, respectively. Two more cranes will be erected in October.

It looks like it was taken from Cooper Place on Albert & College. I am guessing from the 6th or 7th floor? You can see a corner of the Royal Saskatchewan Museum on the very left hand side, with the UofR towers, SIAST and Roberts Plaza off in the distance behind it.

Estimated Timeline

2012 City purchases land
2013-2014 CP leases land, Developer design competition and plan development
2014-2015 Site preparation
2015 Development begins
2025 Estimated completion of development

Given we are at Sept 2014, shouldn't there be a lot more progress and updates?

It's been shifted to be included in the Regina Revitalization Initiative (www.reginarevitalization.ca) which includes building the new stadium, redeveloping the old stadium land, and then also redeveloping the rail yards.

Yes, I went to the RRI website, and what I posted is the most recent info...

Thought there would maybe be some extra info on here, seeing as the website states competition, design and site prep would be occuring this year, yet there is no visable signs of activity on the property, nor has there been any official updates provided.

CP Rail has built a new access road on the west edge near the (never to be complete hotel) and has built a chain link fence along the edge of the property that they still own. So there are things taking place.

I think the city only actually took possession of the part of the railyards that was available for sale earlier this year. I believe the schedule for the railyards is for them to be developed after the new stadium is built, the old stadium is demolished, and the old stadium lands are redeveloped. That would probably put it in the 2020 timeframe unless some developers to push the city to start that project earlier.
