I remember there were a lot of haters when the initial images were released several months back but I think it looks terrific and will be a stunner. I appreciate the fact that the campus tries to maintain a uniform feel.

Would've been a great spot for Trader Vic's. Anyway, glad to see that one of the best interior spaces in the city is finally gonna get some use. There is sooo much that can be done with Union Station and the surrounding area.

So I wondered over to Skyscrapercity to see any different pics and updates and with the metropolis site what you cant see on the webcam is that the shoring beams wrap around the west AND south walls. They aren't kidding. They want it done ASAP.

There's a ton of stuff in the Union Station master plan involving the area outside the station. From demoing the Mosaic residential complex to green space and better connections to Pueblo and other immediate areas. The problem is the timeline. It's all so far out...

I like it too. I esp like that they are combining academic space with the Village space.

I understand why there is not a lot of office space going up around Union Station but I don't understand why they are not pushing ahead with residential/hotel bldgs. Union Station should be a natural for that kind of development.

Yeah, Cambridge in the UK has some great developments that are dorm-on-top/retail-below. Glad to see similar stuff here.

Yeah, a hotel is in the plan, IIRC. They want to demo Mosiac, and then rebuild more of a mixed-use as well (and it had something do with moving the bus area around to the other side of the station). I sat through a presentation a few months back, but the details are foggy. It all sounded good, except for the time frames.

Exactly. And I actually like the plans for the development in those parking lots in El Pueblo. That needs to get done. That area, including Union Station and some of Chinatown, should have more of a SF Chinatown/Old Sac/Old SD hybrid feel to it that is lacking. It's just a homeless encampment at this point.

The pointy tops of the arches are not uniform with the existing architecture at the campus, which has all round-top arches. One's Gothic and the other is Romanesque. I'm probably the only one who notices, and there are examples of both styles coexisting in old European buildings, but you can't say the new arches are uniform with the existing arches on campus. Other than that nitpick, I like everything else about it.

The new Annenberg building that they just opened on campus also was built in a Gothic style. Sticks out like a sore thumb compared to the campus' Italian Renaissance/Romanesque buildings.

IIRC, both the new Annenberg building and USC Village design were done by Harley Ellis Devereaux, so I think it's a good indication of what to expect.

I don't know what you mean by Mosiac. When I google, I find either some apts near Union Station [called Mozaic], or the mosaics in the station. Are you talking about the Mozaic apts getting torn down?

In the District Plan that was approved in 1996, development of 6 million sq ft of space was to be allowed over the 40 acres the Station encompasses. It doesn't look like much has been built since then. Its such a natural for development I have to wonder if something political is slowing down the redevelopment.

He is indeed talking about the Mozaic apts getting torn down. In the new master plan they are replaced with the relocated bus facilities.

What's most important is that it's not clad in stucco.

Yep, BrianMojo has it right, sorry for the misspelling.

LAdowntown news has their development update up. Nothing we don't really already know, but to see it all laid there is pretty nice. So much going on...

I think the biggest issue is the next-door neighbor:
