OMG, SignalHillHiker, your St. John's photo set is fantastic!!!

... I think I'm going to be driving to St. John's eventually. I HAVE to visit that place (and I can't bring myself to pay significantly more than a ticket to Western Europe to fly to the East Coast of my own country from a starting location that's already nearly on the East Coast.)

It's cruise ship season in St. John's.

(They come in the Autumn because Spring is our foggy season and we're not popular enough to warrant many Summer/Winter visits, when Atlantic ships prefer to be in Europe or the Caribbean respectively).

This evening, today's visitor sailed out through the Narrows and I found a perch on Murder Row to watch.

So, the cruise ship has to pass between the green and red markers on the left side of this view. They call it the Narrows for a reason.

No. Flattery is insincere and used to advance one's own interests, as opposed to those of the person being flattered. Hence, the saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery".

You are implying that you are not worthy of the compliment. If people were careful about the way they speak (and we know English speakers are not), they would respond to a legitimate compliment by saying "Thank you" or "you are very kind" or words of the sort.

The main streets from left-to-right are:

Livingstone Street (top of the hill, behind Mile One)
New Gower Street (the main, four-lane drag through the Downtown West End of St. John's)
George Street (all bars, pubs, nightclubs)
Water Street (our main downtown drag, though not so much this far west)
Harbour Drive (the back lane of Water Street, industrial, along the harbour)

Near the top of the photo, you can see New Gower Street split in two
Left is Queens Road
Right is Duckworth Street (our secondary main street, after Water)

Girlfriend told me right away when I showed her the picture. I've actually never been there before, but she said I could experience it if I went to Spirit of Newfoundland with her and her mother (I'm not getting involved with mother-daughter bonding time )

And...don't worry about the Republic incident, I could have sworn we didn't cross all the way to the back of the bar
