I've witnessed tourists at Pearson Airport confusing Mississauga's skyline as being downtown Toronto, as it's much closer and more visible.

When I first saw it I thought it was hamilton.

I only found out it was Mississauga when I got home to Newfoundland.

I don"t think most people would confuse North York with Toronto.The CN tower is a very famous landmark

A lot cities in North America don't have highrises outside their core like Toronto does. So I would actually expect some people to expect nodes to be downtown or whatever. Especially since you can hardly see the CN tower from the 401 or airport

If you're driving on the 401, you probably have a map of Toronto either in your head or on your dashboard's GPS screen, and you therefore should be fully aware that you're not downtown at all.

(A tourist arriving at Pearson, now that's different.)

If other people think that it might explain why so many folks think Hamilton is basically part of Toronto.

I just thought of all southern Ontario as Toronto. It's only since SSP that I've learned where the city's borders end. And even the few separate names I actually knew - Mississauga, Markham, Hamilton, etc. - I just considered them like St. John's, Mount Pearl, Paradise, all functioning as one city. The more you know.

But I've landed in Toronto often enough, with clear views of the downtown, to know the handful of buildings visible from the airport isn't it.

Yeah I've realized since coming here that people tend to think of all of Southern Ontario as Toronto. When they ask me where I'm from I want to say Oakville, but to most people here that means nothing, so now I just say I grew up in suburban Toronto. If they're anti-Toronto I'll say Hamilton because even out here people think of Hamilton as a trashy place (which I don't agree with, but it avoids the "...oh" reaction I get when I say Toronto).

Is Oakville not basically Toronto though? I grew up in Richmond (first ring suburb of Vancouver since I don't know if it has any name recognition in the rest of Canada) and I always considered myself to be from Vancouver. Suburban municipalities are just based on arbitrary borders. I now live in a different suburb of Vancouver, while working in Richmond and going to school at UBC which isn't even in an incorporated area. With all the cross municipality travel that people do every day, I think it's silly trying to explain to people that I live in Delta. I live in a big house just off a highway that 100% would not exist if Vancouver didn't. So I genuinely believe that I live in "Vancouver", regardless of what name my suburb has.

Yes, it wasn't a good example. Oakville is the western fringe of metro Toronto. Hamilton, however, has always been a distinct separate city much like Milwaukee or Baltimore.

Yes, you're right, but that wasn't the point of my post lol. Regardless, to someone from the city of Toronto, Oakville isn't part of Toronto. In the GTA, if I say I'm from Toronto and then clarify that I live in Oakville, it comes across that I'm "pretending". To the rest of Canada Oakville is considered part of Toronto.

I assume that to someone living in the city of Vancouver that they don't consider Richmond to part of Vancouver. Same type of deal. It's why my natural tendency is to clarify that I grew up in the Toronto area, but to Albertans it's all just Toronto, and a huge percentage of them don't like Toronto which is why I sometimes say I'm from Hamilton.
