A walk in the Gastown area on a summer night after an event is one of the most magical and atmospheric urban experiences in Canada...

Anyways, back to skylines.
Municipal boundaries are arbitrary and they are the product of how political issues like amalgamation are dealt with in different jurisdictions.

Toronto CMA has 5,583,064 people in 7,125km^2

Chicago Urban Area has 9,104,000 people in 6,856km^2

As a sidenote, Toronto Urban Area has 5,132,794 in 1,749 km^2, which is very dense.

There are some differences in sources though.

Wikipedia's list of North American urban agglomerations puts Chicago at 8,814,000 presumably in a smaller area than mentioned above, and Toronto at 6,312,000.

It's pretty safe to conclude that Chicago is still bigger than Toronto, by a significant margin. Roughly, I'd say that in about the same contiguous urban area, Toronto has a bit more than 6 million people, while Chicago is either at or just below 9 million people. The difference is more than 2.5 million.

From my understanding, US urban areas cut off at 100 people/sqkm, Canadian urban areas cutoff at 400/ sqkm. In order to compare accurately the same metric would have to be used for both cities.

The first challenge is getting Americans to use metric in the first place. Then we can worry about the same one.

It generally states what everyone who lives there actually knows, that Gastown is probably the coolest neighbourhood in the city. It has several of my favourite higher end restaurants and is often my first choice to going out when in Vancouver for work or fun. Most downtown residents I know feel the same, and it's often a toss up between a bar or restaurant in Yaletown or gastown for a night out. Yaletown is a bit fancier (but can be douchier) and Gastown is a bit hipper (but can be seedier).
I just spent last Friday night bar hopping in Gastown with friends. The place was bumping, many bars and restaurants were overflowing onto the streets. People were everywhere. ssiguy's opinion of Gastown is laughably outdated.

Great pic!

That's the best angle to get the true depth of the Montreal skyline and from that vantage point I thinks it's the best in the country.
