The variance on the property is to allow a building of up to 100feet tall - so 10 stories max.

wow....really?...I was totally captivated by the writing.

I agree that the Chicago comparison is said too often...

however, I do think that no other city is as affected in the current day by its early optimism and expansion as Winnipeg is.....from our physical layout, the architectural character of the city, the psyche of the citizens....there would be no way to tell the story of Winnipeg without this idea being central to its foundation.

I disagree that every city has this story.....it is not the story of Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa...it is unique to Winnipeg (maybe montreal)....it makes our city what it is...its undeniable....suggesting that you could tell the history of Winnipeg without talking about how its initial boom days affected it, seems completely misguided....it isn't a myth....and it is a vital part of what makes this city the way it is.

Gentlemen, I'll be landing in your city in a few hours. Anybody have a good suggestion for dinner? Something walking distance from the fort garry. Anything going on downtown tonight that would be something this first time visitor should check out?

Prairie 360, or Amici's. They are not cheap though... But very close to where you will be.

^ Was at Prairie 360 for dinner last night, followed by the Fort Garry Palm Lounge for drinks. I highly recommend including both into the plan of action. Basically the Winnipeg equivalent of dinner at La Ronde followed by drinks at Hotel Mac

Is Manyfest still going tonight? I was there in the afternoon, and I was amazed at how much busier it was in the evening with all of the runners doing the Electric Donkey run and other activities going on. As with most weekend festivals though, I suspect it wraps up this afternoon.

I don't argue that the 1911-12 boom is very important and worth discussing (especially in the context of Winnipeg's architectural heritage), it's just that as the years have passed it has been reduced more and more to practically the sole defining event in Winnipeg history. Not within academic circles as there is a much broader understanding and appreciation for the entire scope of Winnipeg history, but in the pop culture/journalism realm where a writer is trying to condense hundreds of pages of history into a 2,000 word piece that can hook readers. And yes, I admit I hate the notion that this city should somehow be discounted now because it didn't live up to the empty hype of real estate speculators a hundred years ago.

Anyway, I don't want to be a debbie downer and I'm glad that the Free Press is doing this because I think it will serve an important public education function when it comes to our history... I'm just saying that if the first installment is any indication, it is shaping up to be a very basic treatment of the subject.

Manyfest goes until 6 tonight. Head down Broadway to the legislature. (West from fort garry)

Go for a drink on the river at the forks tonight. It will be busy. That's east of the fort garry. Aim for the giant Martian squid.

I like the Keg downtown across from fort garry. I know it's a chain but this one is in an old HBC building. Great ambiance.

The variance on the property is to allow a maximum height of 145 ft., not 100 ft. Bulk regulation in RMU is 100 ft.

I've overheard that the St. James one might possibly be closing soon, so only Downtown and McGillivary would be left in the city.

Just goto V'J's and be done with it. I give it a six outa ten. Would get eight if they added chili fries to the menu. That big pot of delicious chilli...wasted on hamburgers. And maybe one outa ten customers ask for no chilli. BAH. Theres a pizza joint down there somewhere that serves chicago style pizza. I heard its lovely.

I normally agree with you on almost all fronts that are discussed on this page, but The Keg is not one of them. I find The Keg to be VERY overpriced for what is decidedly average and ordinary food. For context, I would put it well behind Tony Roma's, Earl's and Joey's while costing more. For me, The Keg is one big, fairly expensive disappointment. I'd just as soon save my money and go to Johnny G's... Heck, Boston Pizza. BP's will disappoint me all the same, whilst saving one green Elizabeth. Or two. The building just doesn't make up the difference. For me at least.

Disclaimer: I have never had any "bad" experiences at The Keg, nor do I know anybody who has. It just isn't my cup of tea.

You are right - I remembered it wrong. 145 ft, so 14 floors max.

If it's designed properly, it might help to extend the Sherbrook commercial strip a bit to the north. Right now it basically ends abruptly at Broadway and then becomes car-dominated for a block before becoming mainly residential in character. I think it would be great to extend that strip right up to Portage, not to mention the fact that it will add another 150 residences to the area.

I'm glad to see this one taking shape.

Mmmmmm.....baseball steak. My favourite.

Love the Keg. No better steak anywhere. Especially for the price.

That's funny. I won't eat at any of those places you mention. Except the burger at earls.

Any one know if any of the 150 units at 267 Sherbrook are subsidized housing?

Agree with you completely. But The Keg on Garry has one of the nicest patio's downtown, you don't even notice you're surrounded by a parking lot and back lane.

I would partially agree with you if the entire story was just about that first part and that's it. The next two parts should add more stuff that we don't hear about nearly as much and put the whole story into context more.
