Awesome Toronto shots from Humber Bay.

Vancouver from Grouse is unfuckingbelieveable. I skied there many times and during the late sunny afternoon, with the skyline and the harbour and Mount Baker looming over Burnaby and New Westminster...and those hot Asian babes that need some help learning how to ski (Ahem...I was a ski instructor in a long ago career)...

That's the place to be.

It's not Manhattan massive but it definitely looks like it will turn into a giant; quite possibly the 2nd largest outside Asia. Looking at the proposals on the table, it could happen in as little as 4-5 years. That would be quite an accomplishment for nation the size of Canada.

Thats the impression I have
Melbourne has always had an uncanny resemblance to Toronto imo. Even at street level I often have to do a double take. They look very similar and seem to have an identical vibe.

And in 10 years, it will also likely be Australia's largest city.

I would rather say Melbourne has a 'Toronto' look.

I'd agree with that, as Toronto is both older and much larger. It is sort of interesting that Australia is sort of going through what Canada went through in the 70s, with the smaller city coming up from behind and stealing the show. Melbourne is even building the taller towers. However, it's historical bones are better than Sydney's as far as I know, which isn't the case in Canada's Toronto-Montreal dynamic. They're even sort of going through that with Perth's rise too, surpassing Adelaide as the 4th city. Though Perth is much closer to the population of Brisbane than any of our "4th" cities are to Vancouver.

Yes, I still remember when Toronto and Montreal were 'close' in population. Back in school we would argue about which was bigger, and the teacher would say: "Montreal".

The shape of some of the towers (mostly Aura) give a Melbourne look, but Toronto's skyline is so much more massive than Melbourne...

You might also want to make it clear that you're talking about the more urban style of built form that was typical of the larger cities, starting in the industrial era up to WWII, as opposed to the low density, sprawling, suburban SFH style that started to be preferred after WWII for a number of decades (and still is, to some extent, today).

melbourne had like 500,000 people in 1890. it had a hell of a late-19th/early-20th century. it was larger and more ornate than toronto or montreal.

It was also larger than Sydney for a long period of its history.

The history of Australia's largest city is one of a back and forth between Melbourne and Sydney. It's going to be Melbourne's turn again fairly shortly.

Canada's was all about Montreal until the latter half of the 20th century, and will likely be all about Toronto for the foreseeable future.

Absolutely. I visited last year. The old building stock outclasses either city, and by a HUGE margin over Toronto. Melbourne is just outstanding. I like Toronto, but I loved Melbourne. Booming like Toronto, but with Montreal's bones and Vancouver's laid-back attitude.

Perth (which I also visited, but in 2003) is the closest thing to the Calgary of Oz. Straddling a thin river, with teeming skyline/population count, far from other urban centres, and just chock-full of "Can-do" people () [and thriving businesses based on resource extraction.]

Remember Australia is filled with deadly animals, extreme heat, fires, mouse plagues, and other nightmares.

Does that make Canberra like Ottawa, positioned somewhat between the two regions of power?

Very similar. Although unlike Canberra, Ottawa actually existed as a city (or at least a town) when it was chosen as capital.

That's great and all, but it's 2014.
