Week of August 24
Central Segment
Tunnel
West Portal (Jawbreaker)
- Excavation in drifts is ongoing for the next weeks, progressing toward mining of the west entrance of Lyon Station.
- Installation of the 8th umbrella begins this week, followed by shotcreting.
Central Shaft (Chewrocka)
- The roadheader continues mining Parliament Station cavern in drifts, which will be followed by excavation of the bench and ongoing construction of a lower level concrete wall support system.
- Once tunnel reinforcements advance, the roadheader will mine west toward Lyon Station as early as the beginning of September.
Cavern reinforcement is ongoing, including the installation of umbrellas and shotcreting
East Portal (Crocodile Rouge)
- Mining progresses north under Waller Street as rockbolt installation continues.
- Excavation of the fan niche that will serve the final ventilation system continues.

East Segment
Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF)
Construction activities progress at the MSF as long-term closure of Belfast Road south of Tremblay Road to Trainyards Drive and north of Tremblay Road to Coventry Road continues.
Erection of steel for the MSF building continues
- Work is almost completed on the MSF shed foundation, in preparation for structural steel erection in the coming weeks.
- Shoring, piling and the installation of whalers[i] continue for the MSF connector.
- Delivery of the Petrucco[ii] track support system is ongoing.
- Erection of steel for the MSF building advances.
- Site utilities, storm sewer work and backfilling is ongoing as utility work south of Tremblay Road continues.

Civic Works
Highway 417 Roadwork, Widening and Structure Rehabilitation
- The switch to stage 2 for Highway 417 eastbound lanes was completed to the outside lanes to allow the median to undergo rehabilitation.
Work included paving, obliterating and repainting lines, and shifting the quick moveable barriers (QMB) into the new configuration.
- The westbound lanes switch to the outside lanes is substantially completed as rehabilitation of the median lanes continues with excavation and barrier wall removals from Cyrville Road to St. Laurent Boulevard.
Roadworks
- Sewer work continues on the median lane, beginning east and progressing west on the highway.
- Panel installation is ongoing on the retaining wall along the north and south sides of the highway from St. Laurent Boulevard to Vanier Parkway.
- Roadway construction advances with excavation, milling[iii], placing and compacting granulars, and grading along the north and south sides of Highway 417 from St. Laurent Boulevard to Nicholas Street.
Signage
- The three message signs have been installed; final construction and electrical works to power the signs continue.
Structures
- Widening, reconstruction and rehabilitation of various bridge structures along the highway continue to progress in stage 2 works.
Hurdman Bridge
- Widening and rehabilitation of the structure advances and includes removal of the deck and access in the WBL, and demolition activities in the EBL.
- Headwalls[iv] continue to be installed for sewer outlets at the SW quadrant of the bridge.
- Demolition of the centre pier continues in sections, starting from west and progressing to the east side of the bridge.
Hurdman Bridge / Pont Hurdman
Demolition of the median pier advances in sections, as widening and rehabilitation of the structure continues
St. Laurent Overpass
- Widening and rehabilitation of the structure progresses and includes stripping the deck, forming and pouring of the abutment build up and deck end, backfilling and approach slabs.
Vanier Parkway Overpass– Work advances in preparation of the rapid bridge replacement scheduled for fall 2014.
- Work in the staging area is ongoing and includes forming[v] and pouring the new superstructure’s parapet walls, as well as installation of hardware and construction on the protection system.
- Work on the centre pier continues, including pouring of the footing and the erection of a temporary pier bent[vi] to support demolition activities.

Belfast Road Underpass– Demolition of the existing structure progresses as long-term closure of Belfast Road, north of Tremblay Road to Coventry Road continues.
- Construction and rehabilitation of the structure is ongoing on the protection system, which includes excavation.
- Preparatory works on the underpass’ median pier continue, including placement of steel for column erection, and forming and pouring of the columns.
Lees Avenue Underpass – construction of the newbridge continues in preparation for the rapid replacement scheduled for September.
- Work on the new deck progresses and includes waterproofing.
- Stripping and pouring of the wingwalls and ballast walls is ongoing at the south abutments.
- Granular and sewer work advances on Robinson Road.
- Construction of the new structure centre pier continues and includes installing, closing, and pouring the pier cap[vii], as well as installation of reinforcing steel.
Work on the new Lees superstructure deck progresses in preparation for the rapid replacement scheduled for September
Coventry Pedestrian Footbridge
- Construction of the new footbridge superstructure progresses with reinforcing steel installation.
- Pouring of caissons continues at the north ramp.
- Forming the stairs at the vault abutment begins this week.
- Precast panel installation on the superstructure was completed.

[i]Whalers are horizontal reinforcement used to secure upright structures, such as formwork for the pouring of concrete.
[ii] Petrucco track support is a new system to reinforce and support railroad tracks, patented by the Petrucco Group as a result of over 30 years of experience in the supporting of tracks and the jacking of underpasses.
[iii] Milling refers to the process of removing asphalt pavement with a milling machine.
[iv] Headwall refers to the small retaining wall placed at the outlet of a culvert or stormwater pipe.
[v] Formwork refers to a mold in which concrete is poured.
[vi] Pier bents are vertical frames erected to support elements of the superstructure, such as beams and girders.
[vii] Pier cap refers to the upper part of a bridge pier, intended to distribute loads evenly over the pier’s area.
