Retail at tremblay is a mistake. Maybe one day there will be sufficient traffic, but not by opening.

No retail at bay view is a huge oversight. Likewise for st Laurent where the mall is a little far off for convenience items - soft drinks, magazines, snacks, coffee, and :-) beer.

Tunney's, uOttawa, Hurdman and Tremblay are the ones with retail. Lyon, Parliament, Rideau and St-Laurent are directly connected to retail buildings so it's not necessary IMO.

When Phase 2 is complete will Tunney's still have enough people hanging around for retail to be worthwhile? It will be a transfer point to a lot of local bus routes, but still....

A press release just came out that RTG is about to begin construction on the new Hurdman LRT station.

NOTICE OF ACTIVITY – HURDMAN STATION

August 2014

Please be advised of upcoming preliminary construction work scheduled to begin around Hurdman Station this month.

Starting mid-August, crews will begin to mobilize and stage the area just north of the existing Hurdman Station, in preparation for preliminary construction work on the new Light Rail Transit (LRT) station.

Preliminary construction work will include the following activities that are anticipated to continue for four (4) weeks:

Placement of construction fencing
Utility relocation (sewer)
Construction of an access road
Signage installation
Minimal modification to the existing bus loop

Following the preliminary construction phase, piling activities (placement of structural support poles) for the foundation and elevated guideway of the new LRT station will commence and is anticipated to continue until March 2015.

Foundation work for the new LRT station will commence once piling activities are completed and construction of structure of the new transit station is scheduled to begin in phases, as early as summer 2015 and anticipated to be completed in summer 2016.

The work will be completed during daytime hours with minimal impacts; OC Transpo operations are not anticipated to be impacted.

A portion of the multi-use pathway, between Hurdman Station and the bus-lay-up area, will be realigned and detoured slightly to the east and will remain detoured until summer 2016. Detour signs will be in place.

For more information on the Confederation Line, what we are building where as well as weekly construction summaries, please visit our website at www.ottawa.ca/confederationline.

The LRT corridor in the area is following a slightly different route from the Transitway to smooth out curves so the new LRT station will be built a bit to the north of the existing BRT station, so Hurdman Transitway station can continue to operate unaffected throughout construction.

I agree, Tremblay should not be getting retail.

Problem with St-Laurent is that we are getting the station as is. Lay down the tracks and hang the overhead wires. Done! There's no room for new retail unless we invest an extra 5-10 million.

Bathrooms, retail and a way to eventually get the O-Train line interlined with Confederation should have been added to the design. Hopefully we at least get some development in the area before then (Innovation Centre).

If Tunney's gets partially redeveloped by then, maybe.

Thats interesting that they are turning around Chewrocka (central road-header) before finishing Parliament station to go meet up with Jawbreaker at Lyon. Wonder why they would do that?

I feel bad for the guy who's job it is to write these updates. I mean, how many ways can you come up with to say "work continues". He probably dreams of the day he can finally write "work has stopped"

Well the whole point of construction updates is that it's about ongoing construction. And if you read them, aside from a few things that always stay the same (like those VMS signs), each week's update definitely changes with new things stated.

Well, think about what needs to be done as the tunnel is mined: There is the rock removal, of course, and the building of the tunnel liner with rock bolts, mesh and shotcrete; but there is also the task of reinforcing the overburden for the next sequence of mining – the so-called umbrellas.

The horizontal drills must access the tunnel face to drill in the spiles used to shore up the overburden; which means that the road header can not be grinding at the tunnel face at the same time. The road header can either sit idle until the drillers are done or it can be directed to work elsewhere.

In the case of Jawbreaker (western portal), the road header is being pulled back to work on the WEST access to Lyon Station. Chewrocka (central shaft) is being turned around to start (or, rather continue, since there is a short western chamber already which is used for temporary muck storage and turning around) tunneling west from the central shaft. Since Crocodile Rouge (east portal) really has no place to dig but straight ahead, it does sit idle while the next umbrella is advanced.

It is all in the name of using the equipment efficiently.

Odd that the construction updates say nothing about the Scott-Albert bus detour which is well into construction.

I've been wondering about that, too... I figured it was just because they knew that I'm in the area, and see the progress of that work all the time, so no need to publish updates.

Noticed the start of the work on Hurdman when I took the 97 today.

I find it a bit odd that they're doing a lot of Transitway resurfacing between Campus and Hurdman when all of it is going to get ripped up within a couple of years anyway.

There is now a new route open through Hurdman - Eastbound buses don't jog around the driver washrooms as much and then drive a slightly more southerly route through the layover lot, with a row of concrete barriers taking up a small part of the north edge of the lot.

The lifespan of asphalt in that environment isn't that long, so it makes some sense. When cities design roads, transit buses are the worst case scenario due to the high axle loads, and that's probably the busiest stretch of dedicated transitway in the city.

Still, though, it's only 18 months remaining before that segment of Transitway is taken out of service permanently. Could the existing pavement not perform well enough until then? it just seems like a waste...

Remember the city makes decisions not by avoiding costs like people can, but by trying to choose the lowest costs. Not resurfacing will result in higher maintenance costs.

Good point, forgot about that. Worse roads = more mechanical work on the buses.
