Hugely overpriced and overbuilt, questionable demand and benefit that was never qualified, lack of consultation (except in the 1970s when they first chose this route) and enormous environmental impact on a sensitive area.

But don't worry guys, the music is upbeat so it will all be good. right?

They could do this in such a smaller scale and deal with all of my objections, but instead let's cut a 100 metre swath in the wilderness and divert a river to build the most over-sized piece of highway infrastructure this province has ever seen.

I'm guessing that a dam is exactly the point of that? Next time we have a flood that will likely act like a dam and hold a lot of water back, effectively creating a lake upstream from there. Flow through should be restricted to whatever can flow through those 2 openings.

I bet the openings are designed to exactly fit a 100 year flood. That alignment is the same as it has been for a long time. It shouldn't look so stark as the point of the rendering was to show the road and surrounding works.

This video could easily have been created by a superman villain about how he is going to pave over the rain-forest or something as part of a diabolical plan, it's that over the top with its eraser animation

Is Weaselhead not only there because of another damaging infrastructure project (Glenmore Dam)?

But holy crap that is a wide alignment! I'm glad this project is being future proofed though, makes a change.

It will be a scandal if citizens make it. This thing is so overbuilt, it's crazy. Look at the span of each bridge all to leave space to accommodate this fantasy of a future 16 lane configuration for this leg only that will never be needed, nor is desirable. Forget government flights and cell phone bills, this is waste. If people don't like it, they should speak up

So why was so much money spent to buy land from Tsuu Tina to save the Weaselhead when they're just going to pave over it anyway?

I like how that 4 lane third level overpass at Sarcee made it into the design, the other legs of Henday and Stoney are proof that they try to avoid madness like that at any cost.

jesus. Even if this road could be predicted as useful (no such proof exists as far as I know on traffic projects and growth patterns), could they not have tried to ease into it a bit? Every fly-over is 2+ lanes, every turn is designed for 100km/h.

Even if all the rosiest (rosy in this context means alot of traffic i.e. a bad thing) traffic predictions prove to be true, we won't need a double-lane off-ramp on nearly any of these intersections for 30 years. This is outrageously over-designed.

Hell, Crowchild only became free-flow 5 years ago and it has, and will always have, more traffic than this road will ever see. It sure as shit didn't cost $5 billion either.

Yeah I don't know why the hell they're doing this and not fixing Crow and Deerfoot. Both need to be done, but surely we could have split up the resources a little better. You watch these videos and it's like... "well that's the biggest interchange we've ever built here..." and you say that like 5 times.

Macleod/22X is gorgeous though. That's gonna be sickkkkk

I can only assume that because this agreement with the Tsuu T'ina was so difficult they made sure to secure all the land they needed for the foreseeable future, and then some. Is this all going to be built at once, or is some of it part of the long term plans?

So this thing appears to be designed for at least 4 times as much traffic as it would have from the get go, maybe 8 times if we assume that even the lanes built now won't be filled for a long time. So 8 times.. when is Calgary projected to have 10 million people?

Look on the bright side, plenty of room to stick a Ring LRT in there

It would be interesting to come up with "what $5 billion could buy", giving examples of other city improvements that money could be used for.

"10,000 Giant Blue Rings!"

Two and a half Southeast LRTs, or 7.5 SETWAYs.

You'd think in the video the could have at least TRIED to highlights some precautions they made at Weaselhead and Fish Creek... unless of course they've made none, which would be spitting in the face of every concern raised over the past 50 years of consultation. Comically out of touch.

Why are the lanes so far apart? It seems like they could've built it on 1/3rd as much land!
