Sugarhouse has Sugarhouse Park and Fairmont I think SH is set as far a parks go.

I live in Yalecrest too. Remember there's Sunnyside Park. Granted it's more of a sports park and its location along the Sunnyside Expressway isn't the best, but it is at least open space. I'd like to see the engagement with on the east with Red Butte creek improved within Sunnyside Park. And remember Miller Park a gem that I hope doesn't get all effed up with the cities proposed "improvements" that were started a couple of weeks ago.

I grew up in the SF Bay Area and always thought that Liberty Park was TINY compared to my old stomping ground of Golden Gate Park. Liberty is a nice park but needs a lot of help with maintenance as most SLC parks do. The Liberty Park lake is better now than it used to be but the lakes still become nasty by the end of summer, and the old conservatory is extremely underutilized. Tray aviary has made some great improvements too, but the rest of the park, while well used, needs reinvestment.

That's a great idea. I don't see it happening, but I love the idea.

I guess I have to explain. The photo I posted is a line of big buildings on one side of the street with a large park on the other side. Your picture is pretty and well photographed, but it's not a park, it's just a parking with trees. A very similar photo could have been taken in any city. But I digress, perhaps Salt Lake doesn't need more park space.

"Big buildings"?

In that photo, it's a line of midrises with maybe, maybe, a couple highrises in the distance.

In the SLC photo, I know it's that.

I don't have much to say on the park discussion....
I think the larger parks tend to attract more bums than the smaller ones.

Please tell me we are not discussing this...

It's a picture of NYC and Central Park east side vs. a picture of downtown SLC Main Street. Both are nice pics, but cannot be compared to each other.

And Central Park can't be beat by any city in the fall... Just my opinion.

I think New York beats every city, and I've never even been there.

Also I'm always hearing that small or pocket parks are better than large ones. I personally haven't seen much proof of that. Most the small city parks I go to have little activity going on and can be a convenient hub for transient folk. I think Salt Lake needs a large park relatively close to downtown and dense residential. It needs to have a wide variety of uses for a range of people and needs to be easily accessible from public transit

City Creek Canyon is right downtown. It's closer to downtown than Liberty Park.

Just forget it. I'm an electrical engineer, not an urban planner and I haven't really thought this through. I guess it's just easy to feel Salt Lake is lacking a lot after a summer of visiting so many other great cities. I especially loved Madison. Absolutely gorgeous. Not sure if I'd say the same in the wintertime though.

Madison is beautiful, especially the lakes and the urban feel. I think it's great to be away from your own city so you can come back and appreciate it more - our mountains are unique to any city in the US (even denver... Sorry nothing beats walking 5 min to the foothills of a beautiful canyon), and the beautiful sunsets we get are also very unique and definitely something that makes SLakers homesick. That being said, it's truly refreshing to spend a summer away from your environment (pikes peak in Iowa on the Mississippi is beautiful, so is just spending a summer in a farm house in the middle of nowhere) and exploring other regions (I'd go for Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest - a much different experience than SLC) and getting to know SLC better at the same time - experiencing every part of America is very fprefreshing.

That's what's amazing about America - you can go anywhere in the country and experience the life of someone completely different than you, and it's what makes the American road trip so unique - no other country can replicate what it means to have a road trip like us or experience everything possible with ultimate freedom.

Convention Center Hotel:

Developers must submit proposals by October 24th, and all those companies will be interviewed by November 13th. Sounds like we'll have a selection, a site, and a design by the end of the year.

I little update on the Capital Theater/Ballet West expansion. Most of the exterior treatment has been applied.

The best part of the CCH requirements is this:

Quote:
minimize the impact on the Salt Palace’s rooftop solar panels
This part helps to reduce the chance of a wide body building and nearly ensures that the tower(s) will be tall and thin.

I think that this line from the RFP is also what is helping everyone to understand the substantial nature of the building and the height that may be included.

If the CCH is to the north of the Salt Palace, then the effects towards the Salt Palace's solar panels would be minimal.

That is true, but the only lots that fit to the north of the Salt Palace are owned by the LDS Church and they do have plans for the land as extensions for LDS Business College and BYU Salt Lake.

The oft mentioned Plaza site currently houses students for LDS Business College and some nightly guests, it would be difficult to move the students in the short term.

This mostly removes the properties along the north side from consideration. The exclusion to this is the Fidelity building on the SE corner of South Temple and 3rd South. If that is a viable location, it would be the only spot that wouldn't have an impact.

For minimal impact sites within the zone we are looking at Arrow Press and the Shilo due to shading. RWP will have minimal to moderate impact depending on design. This may be able to be mitigated with panels being included in the RFP.

I feel that they did include this as a way to help ensure that SLC wouldn't get a stucco wall but rather something more iconic or at a minimum something that most people can deal with in the long run.

Utah is not last on this list! It's not the best - rather average, in fact - but higher than Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, Wyoming, Montana and New Mexico.

Yep. Just as I expected. Clunky. That huge bulky top is badly detailed. While alone, the building may not look so bad, but when sitting next to something that is so much more high quality than the addition, it just looks worse. Though, I am trying to reserve judgement until it is finished.
