The issue with Sears isn't the historic warehouse. That will almost certainly remain in someway or another. The issue is with the remaining, newer warehouses.

It is my understanding that the old building is about 300,000 sq ft. It would be a fantastic residential development but it would be very difficult and very expensive to do. It would be a massive undertaking for any developer.

The newer lowrise warehouses will probably have to be razed as their reuse is even more difficult and an industrial user is unlikely to want to be located there. In the end I would bet that at least part of the newer warehouses will be torn down and redeveloped into other, smaller industrial/commerical uses.

One thought I had for the strip along 4th would be car dealerships. Perhaps some of the low rise warehouses could be indoor car lots and service bays.

Coop expanding. Building permit says car wash. LP says:

They've been fundraising for a couple of years. My kids' school had fundraised for it as well. Hopefully it is similar to the one at the South Leisure Centre on Sunset. Good addition.

Anyone know what is going in the offices being built in the parking lot at Truesdale and University Park Drive? I thought I'd heard medical, but nothing more than that generic info. It would be handy to have doctors right by the lab there. It seems like a lot of office space.

The unit closest to UnivPkDr was originally going to be a Tim Horton's (no drive-thu). Building owner was recently notified that Tim's is no longer interested... development delays took too long (BrutallyDishonest, you were right. Your conversation with Ernie must have been a couple days after he told my folks Tims was still a go). Unit is currently For Lease.

Noticed that the City has installed footings for traffic lights at Rae & Parliament (no surprise there).

Also saw a bit of activity in the Holiday Inn at 11th & Rose (former Wasabi space)... appeared to be moving platic tables & chairs. Couldn't tell if they were moving them into or out of the space. Sign still says For Lease, so may just have been moving things in/out of the space (temporary storage).

I also noticed that 2425 11th Ave has a Sold (maybe Leased... can't remember) sign in the window... I believe this is a change from a couple of weeks ago when the Taste of Mediterranean/Downtown Mart space across the alley was being discussed here.

No surprise...but I wonder how they are going to handle people turning. I would guess half the people going in any direction make a turn there. It could easily be a light where it gets backed up because one guy wants to turn but never gets a chance, so everyone going straight gets stuck behind him, making it less efficient than a stop sign. :\

Hopefully they make it like Truesdale/Univ Park where one side gets a green+turn, and then it alternates or opens up to both sides. The only other option is to not allow parking for 100m in any direction of the street and make the right lane straight-through traffic, and have the left lane be a turn lane?

As of last week it wasn't sold and this was a government seizure building so it should have been sold.

Great points. I've noticed that Parliament backs up at least a full block on the west side of the intersection during morning rush (sometimes 2 blocks). This has only been happening since Parliament was extended through to Lewvan.

Restricting parking will be difficult given the cluster of rental units in the area, not to mention bus stops behind Golden Mile... doesn't mean they won't, though.

That would be very welcome. The parked cars around there are 50% of the problem.

SaskPower denied reports Monday that it is renovating its 50-year-old head office at 2025 Victoria Ave. in Regina at a cost of $142.6 million, saying the project is on hold.

Colin Craig, Prairie director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said in an opinion-editorial piece in the Regina Leader-Post Monday that "a little bird told us a while ago that the Crown corporation had been working on a $100-million refurbishment of its head office in Regina."

"The tip seemed odd. How could a Crown corporation plan to spend so much without any trace of media coverage?" Craig said in the op-ed piece.

This Craig person is so out to lunch it's not even funny reporting at its worst ,a little bird told him , for the sake of all those people who work in that he has no clue , that building is in need of repair for heavens sake , what would happen to his house if it were not refurbished after FIFTY YEARS , buildings change buildings advance just as the people who work in them , he has the worst kind of advice any one could give , again clueless reporting on behalf of his organization

Thing that struck me as clueless in his comments was that they seemed to imply he thought the $100million+ renovations had already started... and no one outside the building knew about it [shhhhhhh.... it's a *secret* $100million project... we'll do it at night. Don't tell anyone...]

Likely just my misreading/out of context, but that was my first thought.

Six (6) new street lights are being installed west of McCarthy on 9th north. I am truly hoping they are the LED ones like the new ones installed between Assiniboine and Arcola. Those are BRIGHT and would really help that area.

From today's Leader-Post, an article by Bruce Johnstone:

The owners of the Fairfield Inn and Suites under construction at 3915 Albert St. are looking for a new contractor after the previous contractor, Tilt-Tech Construction, vacated the site of the partially completed, $10-million hotel last month.

Shin Chair, one of the project developers, said the project has been at a standstill for about three weeks, but he is in discussions with another contractor to finish the 122-room hotel, pool and restaurant complex at the corner of Albert Street and Parliament Avenue. He said the plan is to resume construction at the site in September.

The wooden frame walls and concrete foundation were exposed to the elements for several weeks, which may have caused some structural damage to the building. But the City of Regina isn’t too concerned about the lack of progress at the site — yet.

There has been a lot of this lately. Out of town contractors bidding low and later realizing that construction costs here, especially labour, are far higher than they thought.
