And if there is any photographers up in the East Millcreek area, Tanner park has an awesome viewpoint from the pavilion benches just north of the parking lot. You'll find the western most bench to have an opening from the trees that gives a great view from the semi-near southeast.
Maybe second best vantage point after the 5th south, 10th east shot.

I'll be able to get some low quality update photos but I'm north of mill creek. I'll be taking them from TRAX.

Keep in mind they won't toys or Tmac level at all

The project on 400s 500e is coming along quick. I drove by and the are starting to pour the concrete, and have already built the north side of the parking lot. This developer doesn't do a lot of promo, just gets it done. I like that.

How long till the Downtown highrises start spreading out. I like that that all the towers are nicely clustered, but that can only work for so long. we do still have plenty of spots for nice towers, but I would like to see it spread out even more. Everything is east of the Convention Center. To me, everything East of I-15 and north of 600 s can be considered downtown...even if there are classified districts. I would like to see mid size to highrise buildings spread out through out that area. I know that we like density and I think that main is getting some much needed density, but I would like to see stuff spread out

I'd much rather see midrise throughout the rest of downtown (or below 10 stories) with all of to highrise office and residentials infillimg the gaps downtown,until we run out of room and have to start spreading out more.

Currently most of those zones are zoned to 100 feet

Hey guys! I got a cool book from Costco (6.99 at the 17th/3rd one) called Salt Lake City: Then and Now that has a bunch of really cool historical pictures of SLC coupled with text. I'm too lazy to post any picture of the book so just look it up online.

Many of us are aware of it and yes it is a very cool book. I personally don't have it but I thumbed through one at a Barns and Noble awhile back. Also have some of the pages that were posted in the Classic Salt Lake City thread if you want to dig through there and see them.

It still gets used from time to time and Comrade is the biggest poster in it since he is a big fan of the once was. He is kinda nostalgic when it comes to SLC and how it was more dense and the older style of buildings and the gritty. If you ever find cool old shots of Salt Lake you are welcome to post them there.

I agree that we should only have mid-rises east of 300 E or 400 E.

Dan jones, we are lookin at you.

I would say no highrise between 300 east, 1300 east halfway between south temple and 100 south, and 900 south, excluding 400 South and all major traffic corridors (south temple could do well with stuff up to 10 floors - I am really sad to see the city not investing in transit and traffic calming on south temple, or improving corridor access. I do think it should be high end stuff that blends well with local retail and the historic district. It's fun to go down that hill but god people go to fast...)

Agreed. Nothing ridiculous - but there is nothing wrong with a 15-20 story tower, especially residential, east of downtown.

I think 10 to 20 story high rises would be fine in that area.
They already have them there, so there is no reason to not add any more.

A close call for the apartments going up on 5th south and 3rd east, good thing a SLCPD officer spotted the fire

Arson possible in apartment complex fire

Investigators suspect arson at an apartment complex under construction in Salt Lake City.

“There was no good reason for a fire to be going on in there,” said Capt. Ed Endemano of the Salt Lake City Fire Department.

A Salt Lake City police officer spotted the fire near 500 South and 300 East early Tuesday morning and alerted fire crews.

“When we first arrived there was fire we could see from the street,” Endemano said.

Crews kicked down a fence surrounding the building and doused the flames within about 10 minutes. Endemano said the fire is suspicious.

“It’s summertime; there are no heaters turned on to try to keep things warm for the construction people. There was absolutely no reason for a fire to start in there,” he said.

Crews found PVC pipes, fittings, packaging materials, cardboard and pallets had burned in a cemented area of the structure. The fire left about $20,000 in damage.

The cause of the fire is listed as "undetermined" but is suspicious because there was no power connected to the building, the Salt Lake Fire Department tweeted later Tuesday morning.

I think it will be a small parking lot surrounded by bushes and trees, so it's not so obvious.
