It would be interesting to have a vote on various surfacings: seafoam green, concrete, steel and glass, dark glass, brick ... and see the preferences. Some people can never be pleased

Do you have a link to the precise thread? I looked but couldn't find it. This I gotta see
.

(later) ... found the link! Harsh feedback, but on one point perhaps valid; (about the spandrel)

Great shot, thanks.
745 may one day come to "symbolize" that area and the wealth associated therewith, or simply make a great design statement in and of itself.
Stats on how many storeys (of a very modest 23) that are fully up? Seems like about 17.
This building will, I think, help "dynamize" Alberni street, which in itself has real potential over and âbove just the snazzy store names, as can be seen in the
neglected but elegant brick building on the left, but need scads of work on lighting, rewiring, and street furniture.
It still has a raw look to it.

Oh what age, distance, and sheer foolishness will do. Excuse me, please.

(What DOES Alberni look like, anyway? Be interesting to do a profile on the street, in the right thread)

For a shorter tower it sure has a strong presence, very happy how it is turning out.

Vancouver may not be building the tallest towers, or the most in the country, but honestly we seem to be currently building the highest quality IMO (on average).

Although the Carmana Plaza may not be a beauty contest winner, is does extend back from 745, giving a certain continuity and all this gives a pleasant linearity to Alberni Street. IMO.

I've always found it to be a handsome, though unremarkable, building.

i personally think we don't have enough concrete, and way too much glass. lol. or at least, the same looking types of glass. and not too many variations of it.

Definitely would like to see more concrete (a la 200 Granville or 1075 West Georgia). The city looks far too sterile with all the glass.

Yes, it's becoming rather imposing from street-level as well.

Walking down Thurlow with this in view, then Shangri-La and Trump is creating quite the sleek neighbourhood effect.

That's what makes Vancouver different from the rest of the world: city of glass. We should be celebrating the fact as well. Agree that more variations of glass need to be considered.

We do have our share of concrete in West End... But I do agree with you. More concrete towers would bring more color to this city as you can paint concrete with any color. And to note, I don't miss any commieblocks, but some modern concrete towers.

I thĩnk the problem is with everyone wanting floor-to-ceiling windows for their condos...

Yes but you don't even get floor to ceiling windows in a lot of the "glass towers". They seem to be sticking two feet of spandrel at the bottom of the floor for some stupid reason lol

The angled shape of this building is becoming very visible from Thurlow Street. I have to repeat my question on how will they be washing those lower windows?
