Any Regina historians know the story on the property here? The article says it was a bus turnaround. City bus? Why would they need this?

Because they were trolley buses.

There is also a bus turn around on Dewdney Avenue West @ Horace Street. Back when the city was much smaller these points were the 'end of the line' and allowed the trolley buses to turn around. Yes, we had electric-powered buses years ago. But all of the power lines and poles required for them were IMO, ugly and cluttered the streetscape.

Regina's experience with its City Square Plaza should be a cautionary tale for Saskatoon of the problems that can arise from poor planning and execution, especially unintended consequences.


Here are just a few issues with Regina's Plaza that come to mind:

1. massive construction delays (with resulting traffic snarls);
2. huge cost overruns;
3. permanent increased traffic congestion;
4. loss of street parking;
5. loss of mature trees and greenspace;
6. zero retail/restaurant businesses (no parking and limited vehicle accessibility);
7. expensive stage that is never used;
8. amenities cut from final plan due to cost overruns;
9. promise of outdoor skating rink that does not fit;
10. surprise underground utilities that result in limitations and cost overruns;
11. loss of bus routes;
12. creation of a winter and evening wasteland.

The Plaza has hosted a few great events and is often bustling in summer at noon. It could have been so much better.

When I was home, even tho it was so nice to see the incredible amount of new developments and revitalization in certain areas of Regina, when I was downtown the one visual aspect that I could not take my eyes away from was the brutal amount of sidewalks falling into or already in disrepair. Even Victoria avenue which is a major gateway looked awful. Yes they are re doing broad street and I know they can only repair what they can with the budgets but does anyone know what the city's plan (if there even is one) is regarding the sidewalk system downtown? They want to make it more pedestrian friendly yet a lot of the areas are not very friendly to walk on in the first place.

For those of you who are soccer players (such as myself) there is good news about soccer pitches in this city. The RSA (Regina Soccer Association) recently sent out the following to all soccer players/coaches in the city:

- Lease at Evraz place is set to expire but will be renewed
- RSA is finalizing details and announcement for a new proposed, dedicated full indoor soccer facility in east Regina for fall of 2015
- Will include a licensed lounge and seating for 1,100
- New facility will also have outdoor turfs fields with lighting for night games
- RSA will be the facility manager

More fields is always good news but particularly the indoor facility as the RSA will no longer need to schedule large gaps in play due to Evraz place booting them out for other events like Agribition and Grey Cup.

I agree with you. The City should have looked after replacing all of the sidewalks in the downtown core before ever thinking of creating the City Square.
The sidewalks are, in one word, a disgrace.

Where in east Regina would there be a good space for a soccer facility of that size? Or would it be more on the outskirts like the hardball diamonds on/near Tower Road?

The spooky part is that the sidewalks downtown are a lot better than they were at this time last year. Now you can at least walk downtown without fear of falling into a knee deep hole in the middle of the sidewalk (mostly).

On the topic of sidewalk construction - I am amazed at the lackadaisical pace of sidewalk construction when it does happen - the stretch of south Albert has to be the worst - plodding along and pouring maybe 20 ft of concrete per day. And if there are more than 2 drops of rain they just pack up and don't return for days. I could understand the pace and priority if it was some stretch of suburban crescent - but Broad and Albert streets?

Of all the developments listed as going ahead the only one we don't know anything about is The Towns South. I know it's north of the Greens on Gardiner, but to my knowledge no information has been made public.

Can't wait to see Harbour Landing West and the new area north of Lakeridge.

I can imagine Harbour Landing west going from Campbell Street to Courtney. I wonder when they plan to close the access to the TCH between the two. As that would be a BIG hazard. Similar to what they are trying to correct at White City. Also I hope that they decide to build an interchange at what would be Pinky Road and the West Bypass. And connect Parliament to it. That way at least the connections to that neighborhood would have good network access. Maybe another interchange at Courtney and TCH or a flyover to the south service road?

So far, I have heard of one business going into the old Canadian Tire on South Albert. Fionn MacCools will open sometime next year. It's an Irish pub chain from Atlantic Canada.

I wonder when they will begin work on the Westerra development? I think that is a nice spot....close enough to downtown and yet will be quiet neighborhood.
