I've said it before, but I think the Cecil would be a perfect location for a Hostel.

Does anyone know what the open secret is?

I'm really intrigued by this and I'm amazed that this "open secret" hasn't been picked up by anybody on the forum yet. The original RFP was for retail on that block but that was also before Rio Can scooped up the parcel just to the north of Block 39. Perhaps whoever purchased the site worked with the CMLC to change what the land would be used for once they realized one of the big commercial REITs was going to be scooping up some of the best tenants one block north? Apparently Druh's been dropping hints about the new library on Twitter recently.... maybe one of the forum members who uses Twitter regularly can convince Druh to drop us a hint or two about this project.... or in the very least let us know when we can expect an official reveal of the open secret?

So when can we expect to see renders of this Block 39 development, and who purchases the parcel?

I wouldn't expect Verve to get going soon. Unfortunately, for some reason, looks like Fram's using this site as a giant yard for construction equipment/materials for nearby projects.

I was giving this 'open secret' a bit more thought last night and was curious if the Block 39 parcel would be large enough for the construction of an 'urban format' hockey arena similar to the ACC in Toronto? The City Hall LRT station means that both LRT lines would be in the arena's doorstep and the Green Line LRT is also supposed to have a stop in the East Village. Plus the new City parkade that is supposed to be built at 9th Ave and 4th Street could potentially handle a large amount of the automobile traffic that an arena would attract, eliminating the need for the site to be surrounded by a sea of parking. Other than an arena, I really can't think of anything that would be kept as an open secret for an East Village block that would have Councillors excited.

Looking forward to seeing how this looks once the installation is complete!! CMLC has definitely been doing a good job at bring art components into the East Village.

Sentinels to keep watch over East Village

...“Our new landscape feature – The Sentinels – includes five extremely heavy glass and concrete pillars depicting historical city figures, all suspended from a steel framework at the corner of 6 Street and 9 Avenue SE. The installation is part of the extensive landscaping program CMLC has been advancing around the circumference of Fort Calgary since 2007,” says Susan Veres, CMLC’s VP Marketing and Communications. Aptly called ‘The Edges’, the landscaping program has created a respectful delineation between the urban energy of East Village and the natural character of Fort Calgary, a 40-acre open space and designated historical site.”...

...“Needless to say, the structure’s artistry relies heavily on the support of engineering science,” said Ken Heinbecker, Heavy Industries’ VP Marketing. “Executing the concept required extensive consultation and careful alignment between our design group and a partnered engineer, whose greatest challenge was devising the armatures to support some 24,000 pounds of glass and concrete. As the first installation of its kind in Calgary, it’s a landmark project for us, and for the city.”...

Edit: Found a new video talking about the project and showing off the installed pieces. If the bases that are shown are the permanent structures the pieces aren't quite as impressive as I was hoping for.... something a little less like a Christmas Tree planter would have been nice.

Hmm interesting, but idk if a city block is big enough though.

Maybe, might be slightly small. Could it work for a convention centre?

The 203 Green Line will not be in the EV. It will be on 2nd Street West and 12 Avenue South.

Other than that, it would be really cool if they built a stadium there.

The Green Line will have a station built at 10th Ave and 4th Street SE... essentially right next to the new CPR underpass that was constructed, so just under the bridge from the NMC and just around the corner from the new Central Library. I suppose the fact that the station will be on the south side of the tracks means that it technically won't be in the East Village, however it will be just as quick for a large number of the residents to access this new Green Line station as it would be to access the existing City Hall station so in my mind it still counts as an East Village station. For a basic overview of the stations for the south east portion of the Green Line check out this document: http://www.lrtonthegreen.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Southeast-Transitway-Staging-Plan.pdf

We don't know where the Green Line will be downtown. Other than a station at 4th street and 10th Avenue SE, the entire alignment is subject to change. It may jog over to 12th avenue, cut back down 4th street and then under the river. It may stay on 10th avenue. There are a lot of options being looked at right now.

Was a routing near 4 st SE/the East Village ever considered for the Green line?

There is a station on the south side of the CP tracks, just off of 10th avenue at 4th ST SE. That is really the only fixed point for the alignment right now.

It is right next to or on the provincial train station land, so as the High Speed Rail ends at Ice Cream Terminal I am fine with this.

This is where my dream of having an underground Ctrain station on 10th and 4th and above it is where the new flames arena will be. I will die a happy man if this ever happens

Looks like there's going to be a big park space south of the bridge into EV judging by all the work that's going on

Yes, I think you are right - I was talking to one of the EV ambassadors today and he said something about that being put in..don't know how big it would be though.
