Do we have a better idea when St. Patricks Island bridge will open? Not that I pay a ton of attention to it, but it doesn't seem like a ton of progress has been made lately. It would be great to have it open while the weather is still relatively nice.

I seem to remember seeing some renders showing the gas station still in place - not sure if they were authoritative on future plans in any way though. Definitely a unique little building and really convenient/cheap. I can't help but wonder if the ownership/management is somehow connected in with one or more of the cab companies. Many cabbies seem to use it as a stop off for breaks and I can imagine there might be some advantage to them having their own petrol supplier in downtown (account purchases, discounted rates, etc.).

I do recall... I think I was talking to Michael Brown and he said the gas station was independently owned, so in theory it could be there forever.

There's that PetroCan plus the Centex just to the northeast of that PetroCan - that would make it two stations in Inglewood.

I think they're currently building another park/landscaped area leading up to it on the EV side.

St. Patrick's Island Park will not be open until next summer at the earliest. Their intended completion is next fall though.

By 2018, the east village is going to be a full functioning neighbourhood with multiple parks/plazas, thousands more residents, and two of the most important cultural institutions in the city. Just let that sink in for a minute

^Most looking forward to that rooftop at Simmons next summer. The one at National on 8th is awesome, great views too

EV Hilton still hasn't started? The office and residential sectors are booming across the inner city, yet all we have to show on the hotel side this cycle are two mid-sized Beltline hotel conversions?

Meanwhile I've heard from a few people it's almost impossible to find a room anywhere downtown for less than $300/night anytime of the year. What's going on with all these false starts? No financing?

Yeah, it doesn't make sense. We have 5 major hotels that are seriously proposed but no movement on any of them.

We have always seemed to be behind on the hotel front. It still confounds me that we don't have a super lux brand hotel built as yet. No Ritz. No super fancy Fairmont. Vancouver has quite a number and we haven't managed one.

Also I thought the East Village or Eau Claire would be great candidates for such a hotel, but alas that is not what we are seeing.

I agree. Calgary has some astronomical year-round hotel prices. Weekdays cost more than weekends, which is good for hotels. Most visitors are on business, which is good for hotels. Convention and event space is in high demand, which is good for hotels. On the demand side, all factors seem to be ripe.

Given that the American Hotel industry was one of the hardest hit in the 2009 downturn, I wonder if hotel chains have been too short of capital to take a risk in Calgary over the past few years.

That's a good point ... I believe that once one or two of these hotels actually get going that other will follow suit - that may be until those initial one or two are operational to illustrate the demand and market is existent in Calgary

I really hope Clubsport goes ahead as planned once the Enoch Sales house is moved, that's one hotel I am hopeful for that will start this year

Council approved the lane closure for block 39 in the East Village on Monday. That's the eastern half of the parkade block. Nenshi brought up how important this will be for the East Village and that it was an open secret what is going in there. Nenshi and Druh Farrell were describing it as very colorful and beautiful (from what I can recall.)

Does anyone know what the open secret is?

I'm really hoping for projects in transitional areas like the Marriott Residences on 10th, ClubSport, EV Hilton, and the Eau-Claire mega projects get going. Nice to have more CBD projects, but the core area is already so dense, some of these transitional areas on the border of the CBD need to catch up!
